This review is from: Tacstar Sidesaddle Fits Mossberg 500, 590 and 590Da (Sports)
This item works great but I gathered from the description that no modifications would be necessary for the Mossberg 500. In fact it interferes with the forend when it is brought to the rear position. I either had to cut down the forend or replace it. After studying it for awhile I instead cut down the Side Saddle to hold 5 shots instead of 6. I had to make several cuts with a radial arm saw and drill and tap some new holes in the Side Saddle. It now looks and functions great!

defacto standard for pumps,

This comes in 6 shell, 5 shell and I believe 4 shell sizes. I bought the SIX shell model for a Mossberg 500 tactical. For the Mossberg 500 it mounts as a metal plate by replacing the screw in the back of the receiver and replacing the punch out pin for the trigger assembly and replacing it with a screw. These two screws are used to mount a metal plate to the receiver and then the plastic shot shell holder mounts to that metal plate. It holds shells tight enough, but not too tight.
ONE POSSIBLE ISSUE: If your pump action forend overlaps the receiver on the back stroke it will interfere with the Sidesaddle. You will have to modify or replace the forend to work with the Sidesaddle. For me it was not too bad - I removed the standard Mossberg forend and carefully trimmed the forend with a coping saw and utility knife, then carefully filed and sanded it to look near perfect. Looks great and works perfect with the sidesaddle.

Tacstar 6-shot side saddle,
This review is from: Tacstar Sidesaddle Fits Mossberg 500, 590 and 590Da (Sports)
Quality is better than I expected. Extremely easy to install on Mossberg 500. Buy the 4 shot sidesaddle if you have a long field type fore grip though.

I am a big fan of this side saddle. I currently have it installed on my mossberg 835 accu-mag 12 gauge. I used to use that shotgun for hunting everything from turkey to grouse. Where I hunt I have to cross roads and I needed something to hold my shells when I unloaded it to cross roads. Lots of game wardens are out where I hunt so I am always careful to follow the rules. This fit my needs perfectly. I can unload my gun and not have to mess with putting shells in my pocket and trying to find them again. My shotgun takes a beating when I hunt. I use it to clear brush away on hunts, break branches and even dig some holes so I have given the side saddle a good amount of abuse. Here are some thoughts:
Pros: - looks awesome - keeps shells handy - hugs shells well, after 6 years it still holds shells snug - easy mounting directions - matches my black shotgun - includes all needed screws and mounting material - made of plastic - wont rust and needs little care Cons: - very small / short screws used to mount saddle. - Screws will fall out - use some lock-tight to keep them in place - plastic got faded - (i used some Armoral to bring them back to shiny black) In my opinion this is a great buy for a home defence or hunting shotgun. Its durable and functional for a good price. My only issue was losing some of the small screws fairly often. Even after using Lock-tight I lost 1 screw. I think the screws are so short in lenght that there is not enough surface area for lock-tight to grab onto. Even after losing some screwes a quick trip to a local hardware store and a dollar later I was back in action with enough screws to hold this thing on forever. Great product!

Definitely a good way to keep your ammo with the gun without having to leave the magazine tube loaded and wearing out the spring. I bought this for my Mossberg 590A1 Special Purpose shotgun. Install was easy and I had it mounted in a matter of minutes. I also got an ammo holder for the stock of the shotgun along with a shotshell sling so I now have 26 rounds ready to go just by picking up the gun. It's just a simple matter of quickly chambering a shell and loading the magazine tube and I'm ready to defend my home. Definitely a great product and I would recommend it to anyone owning a Mossberg 500/590. The only thing I don't like is that when it's time to clean the gun, I have to take off the side saddle in order to get the trigger assembly out. Not a huge deal though. Definite must have for shotgun owners.

Rather than taking the screws out of the shotgun and mounting the aluminum plate, I took the plastic part off the aluminum plate, and used 3M double sided tape to mount it. It's solid and lighter this way.

I have a Mossberg 590 and the side saddle installed without any issues whatsoever. I highly recommend you read the various reviews and watch the installation video on youtube from other purchasers. The video will definitely save yourself time and effort or you can just read the directions, carefully.Package include two allen wrenches and vendor recommends using loctite 242 (blue). The shorter screw is matched to the nut and you will need a 1/4" socket to tighten. The washer is installed with the head of the long threaded screw which replaces the aft pin holding the trigger assembly. Take care not to damage the threads when screwing item to the provided metal plate. The shotshell carrier is plastic and bows a bit when removed from the metal plate out of the packaging. Take care when installing the six screws when mounting the shell carrier to the metal plate and ensure you tighten opposite screws, basic torquing procedures. The 590 has a "corn cob" type foregrip so it does not interfere with the shot carrier. I also have a UTG picatinny rail on the top of the receiver and plan on installing a small red dot scope. On the stock, I have an elastic shell carrier for 5 more rounds so I have 11 rounds total. I figure in an emergency, I can grab about 5 loose rounds and shotgun, load, and have 11 more rounds ready even though the 590 can hold 8+1 rounds. You should checkout the pictures of another reviewer of his Mossberg 590 with duracoat, looks really nice. NOTE: I was gathering serial numbers of my firearms and looked for the number on the Mossberg and couldn't find it. Realized it's on the left side behind the carrier and did not want to go through removal process. So, make sure you write down the firearm serial number before you install the carrier.

Mounted on a 500a Tactical. I mounted it using the supplied screws, some of which do not screw in flush with the saddle plate. With some effort and Loctite, it is a non-issue. The screw that is used to replace one inside receiver (with the action pulled back) can be annoying to work with, the screw head is shallow. Again, a little effort and Loctite can make this a non-issue. Holds shells fairly tightly, yet not so tight as to be annoying.

This side saddle will fit a variety of guns, but I can only vouch for it fitting my Mossberg 500 Cruiser. Installation was easy and the unit is very secure on my gun. Re loading is quick and easy and the 12 gauge shells fit snug. It comes with several different blocks to adapt to the size rail you are using. Very happy with the purchase.

Great product. Attaches easily to my mossberg 500 and is very secure. Also is easy to get off when cleaning time comes. Works great for what it is intended to do.
