1.0 out of 5 stars This game is a horrible waste of time and money.
Oh, my. What an awful, awful game. I can't believe I spent money on this sucking black hole of mediocrity. The box states that it includes "solo campaign" play, but in actuality, it just includes "practice sessions" where you can play on the various maps that are used in multiplay. There is no attempt at plot or continuity, you just choose whatever map you want to play in...

5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: Highly Addictive, March 7, 2002

*** If you're not familiar with Counter-Strike... ***
In general terms, Tactical Ops is a first-person shooter with realism added into it. There are 2 opposing teams - Special forces and Terrorists. The player chooses one of the teams to play on. There are various weapons available: pistols, sub-machine guns, rifles, and grenades. These weapons are bought with money that is assigned to each player, which accumulates with more kills the player makes. The objective of the game is to eliminate the players on the opposing team by killing them or rescuing hostages. Unlike Doom, Quake or Duke Nukem 3D games, players do not respawn immediately after they die. They need to wait until the round ends - when one of the teams is eliminated. This game began as a mod (modification) of Unreal Tournament a few years ago and eventually became retail - following the footsteps of Counter-Strike, a Half-Life mod.

*** If you have already tried Counter-Strike... ***
Tactical Ops is very similar to CS (Counter-Strike). A major difference between the two, which may have caused many of the players to switch from CS to this game, is the dynamics. When someone shoots you in CS, you immediately slow down a lot - thus, giving that person a high advantage, and which usually means that whoever shoots first would normally get the kill. This is not true in Tactical Ops - your speed remains unchanged even when someone is shooting at you, making the game more fair. Also, the gameplay is a little faster, meaning that the walking speed is slightly faster compared to that of CS. In addition, the height of jumping is a bit higher in Tactical Ops. HE grenades are more realistic: maximum damage is instant death when the player gets too close to one when it explodes. Graphics are slightly more crisp in Tactical Ops than in CS. The substantial dynamics of this game have caused me to be entirely absorbed with this game.

*** If you're already playing Tactical Ops... ***
This retail version has a slight improvement in graphics - I personally think the graphics right now are superb already. More maps are included in this version. A few new weapons are out and new skins for some of the current weapons are revamped. New female skins for both Special Forces and Terrorists are available. Other new features may have also been included - check with the official Tactical Ops site. Gameplay should be identical to that of Version 2.2.

*** Conclusion ***
A very playable, absorbing, dynamic and stress-relieving game! Though unoriginal, this game is highly recommended for players that like first-person shooters. If you've got good skills/strategy/tactics in first-person shooting, then Tactical Ops is very adaptable, though new techniques such as timing grenade throwing, and learning to reload at the right times need to be learnt. A must-buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Game, Ever, February 12, 2002

Yes! After playing TacOps for nearly 6 months straight, this has to be one of my favorite games ever. Sure, not the most original, but definitely one of the best! Cool weapons, simple controls, and hard-core gamers aplenty online make this my favorite. This game has more of an arcade feel than Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor, so twitchers might enjoy it more. And just like UT, you can make your own maps, or download hundreds more.It runs fine even on older machines(and Macs too) Very fun, and much much(x100!) better than CounterStrike.

Alright, if you haven't played this game, let me paint a picture for you. Tactical Ops is like CounterStrike on a sugar/caffine high. The selection of weapons, skins, maps and situations are astounding, and the action is fantastic. Online play is huge, and that's your best bet for the real fun, because you'll find yourself spanking up on the bots (computer controlled opponents) pretty quickly. If you're a fan of this genre, this is one game you can't pass up, and best of all, it's fans (folks like me) contribute to the game in countless ways. Go to [URL] for more info on the game and it's community. Also visit the official site at [URL] to Have fun, I know I am, and I'll see you on the public servers when you're ready to fight. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Tactical-Ops, Assault on Terror, September 23, 2002
This review is from: Tactical Ops (CD-ROM)
This game is perfect in essence, apart from the few hackers that pop up from time to time. You won't find a more proffesional online experience anywhere else. The graphics and sound do the job well and compatibility seems to be at a premium.

If you're new to first person shooters be warned though, a lot of tac ops players have this game down to a science by now and you will definatly spend hours getting shot whilst getting no kills yourself. By playing this game online you'll be volunteering yourself up as a sterotype 'movie extra' getting taken out by proffesional geek gamers round after round. That said it's all the more rewarding when you do take down a few nurds.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like this game, August 2, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Tactical Ops (CD-ROM)
This game is a CounterTerrorism game where you select from two teams which are Special Forces or Terrorists.

Each team has different objectives to complete, for example, Special Forces has to rescue hostages and prevent Terrorists from escaping, while Terrorists have to blow up specific targets with C4 explovies.

Also there are special objectives that each team can complete like in the CIA map, Terrorists break in and hack into CIA computer files and release sensitive information into the public.

Also this game has realistic World settings and weapons. This game takes place all over the world from Small Arab Towns to Asian Cities to the deadly alleys of United States Cities. Some weapons that can be found in this game are, Deagles, Mp5 navy, Ak-47, m16, m60, m4m203 grenade launcher, and much more!

Overall this is a Great game that I recommend you buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tacops: The best FPS to date., April 25, 2002
This review is from: Tactical Ops (CD-ROM)
The maps, the skins, the guns, the gameplay....purely incredible. I have been playing the beta of tacops religiously and the tacops team has improved upon what i was already addicted to. If you are a CS, Wolfenstein, or MOHH player you will instantly lose interest in the rest after a little time with tacops. 5 stars just arent enough to rate this awesome game with.

5.0 out of 5 stars TO is the #1 good guys vs. bad guys FPS!!!!!!, April 23, 2002
This review is from: Tactical Ops (CD-ROM)
I think the massive online following says enough. Since it's the #1 mod for Unreal Tournament, it has evolved into something quite a bit more.

Words can't explain the immense joy of this addictive game aside from "BUY IT NOW!!!".

The action, weapons, strategy is phenomenal!!!

Even with the immense frustration of someone sniping you just makes you more determined to ensure you settle the score!
