5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, December 11, 2006
This review is from: 100+ Tactics for Office Politics (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
This book will really make you think and evaluate how you perform and react in the workplace. The book has many different sections that should assist you in how you may want to behave in your workplace. Chapters include: dealing with a difficult boss, 25 career blunders, 25 moves you must make, how to get your boss to advance your career, building your power, major players in your company and how to get them to go to bat for you, and so much more.

What I like about this book is that it does not ask you to employ and dirty or devious tricks with your co-workers, but rather, it asks you to take the high road, and to treat people well. When things do go wrong, it has many suggestions for bringing to light situations in a delicate way that will aide in helping the situation without a huge loss of face to the instigator.

I would highly recomment this book, as it may help you get to get along with your co-workers, how to deal with a difficult boss, and how to move ahead in the company. Excellent suggestions are made on networking, learning your own motivations, and tips and changes you can make in your career. This book is well worth the read.

2.0 out of 5 stars dry "receipes" - better material out there, August 31, 2008

Basically, the author has acquired a lot of experience as a management consultant in handling political situations and has applied a series of "tactics" that worked for him when he was a consultant, from there it is inferred that they will work to other type of work. The aspect where it doesn't fit totally is that a management consultant is not expected to do the same type of "mission" as a company member. Neither in time, scope or approach. A consulting job is very different from a permanent one.

In the end the book does not really cover the topic of politics where I expected it and fail to explain the how and why of a situation and eventually appears as an assembly of contrived recipes.

There are other books out there that address the subject better. Corporate Confidential: 50 Secrets Your Company Doesn't Want You to Know---and What to Do About Them and this one:
Secrets to Winning at Office Politics: How to Achieve Your Goals and Increase Your Influence at Work

I would advise to check the reviews for this book as it may suits people who would like to have simple, directive instructions. As far as I am concerned, and it may be due to my learning style, I was a bit uncomfortable with the lack of perspective and found the content of this book rather dry and lacking context explanation.

This review is from: 100+ Tactics for Office Politics (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
This little book had some pretty good tips about dealing with the "political" plays that all are often victims of in an office setting. Well worth it for the section of countering these types of attacks. Wish there were more examples.
