1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Strategy Guide Ever, July 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tactics Ogre (Prima's Official Strategy Guide) (Paperback)
This guide is the worst excuse for a strategy guide ever. It starts out by giving you two pages of gameplay basics, which are so basic the average gamer could figure them out within about 3 seconds of actually playing the game. It then moves on to classes, it has two and a half pages worth of classes each class getting between two to six sentences giving the barest of information about what the class actually does. It doesn't go into any great detail about what the classes special talents are it just says things like the muse can handle a spear. Not even mentioning the fact that she can go through water or use spells just that she can use a spear. By now you may be thinking "I don't remember a muse". Well thats another thing, not only do you only get a few sentences, many times the names are wrong, muse? mage the female wizard? and what is an Evil One? The guide doesn't bother to include the pre-requisets of each classes, and also misses several of the more secret ones, no white knights, no gorgons, no cyclops. The only other thing this guide has except for the walkthrough is one page which tries to stuff every item in the game, obviously the list is unhelpful because it has no stats on it. The walkthrough itself is a huge disappointment not only does miss basically every side quest, (including the massive Hell's Gate) it also misses at least a dozen secret characters and at times will actually tell you to do stuff that will cut you off from getting a secret character in the future. It also seems that the author didn't try all the dialog options, because at times he tells you to pick choices I personally wouldn't choose. The strategies themselves are ok I guess, but nothing a third grader with a little experience couldn't do by himself. Overall this strategy guide is absolutely worthless, and most gamers would be better off without it. There are some good online guides floating around the internet if you need them though.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ian "Ogre Battle" Osborne? I don't think so, September 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tactics Ogre (Prima's Official Strategy Guide) (Paperback)
It's hard to put into the words the disappointment I felt when I received this "strategy guide." Tactics Ogre is a complicated game that requires alot more than 96 pages of worthless information. Ian Osborne should keep far away from writing strategy guides if this is the best he can do (personally I wasn't impressed by his Ogre Battle guide either) and if anyone's thinking of purchasing this guide, DON'T. It's a waste of money. It's a crying shame that Prima put their name on this...apparently they don't care too much about the Ogre Battle series to let such sub standard guides out for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars the worst strategy guide ever created, June 23, 2005
This review is from: Tactics Ogre (Prima's Official Strategy Guide) (Paperback)
Without question, this is the worst of all strategy guides. It is written hastily and without thought. The writer is playing the game quickly to get through it, does not explore at all, strategies are ineffectual or completely wrong, and he does not like the game at all. So much is missing, that even a novice could stumble upon the secret stuff. This guide is a disgrace. Prima should not have bothered with it. It is obvious that the writer's strengths are not in playing video games.
Here are some of the important points missed:

When faced with multiple things to say in dialogue, the writer chooses only one when different outcomes are determined by these choices. You only find out one outcome from one choice, thanks to the writer's lack of exploration.

Does not tell you how to use Jenounes to recruit Oxyones (Law Route).

When faced with two or more choices to attack a stronghold, the writer chooses one (usually the hardest and least rewarding). Depending on your choice, you could find better stuff and have an easier time than letting the writer guide you.

Chapter 4 is the worst wriiten part of the guide.

Does not tell you how to prevent Kachua from committing suicide and rejoin your party.

In the battle with Shelley, it does not tell you to:
1. bring the three sisters (Sisteena, Selye, and Olivia) to battle (Chaos and Neutral Routes).
2. knock Shelley down to one or two points, persuade and let her retreat.
3. get Shelley in a cut scene to join you.
4. open the four forts and take the sisters to them for upgraded class.

Doesn't tell how to recruit Deneb (witch) from her shop.

Doesn't tell how to unlock the secret areas containg Rendal (gunner) and Ganb (beast tamer) and how to recruit them.

Doesn't tell of all the different levels to the Castle in the Air or the routes through them. It just tells of one, not the easiest one either, up the mountain.

Doesn't tell how to unlock the Hell's Gate, save and recruit Radlum (warlock), fight the gold guardians, fight Nybbas (undead wizard) on the 100th floor, and get the Firecrest.

In fact, Prima should recall all old copies, rewrite with a better person (I would help with that), and put out a new copy. This game deserves better than the pathetic treatment given by this writer. Do not buy this black and white, cheap incomplete guide. There are Internet sites that are far better and have all of the secrets of the game. This guide reveals very few secrets, terrible battle strategies, and only a basic walkthrough. Incompetent, incomplete, and worthless.
