Book Description

December 31, 1998 8 and up
Instill pride, self-confidence and discipline in your child! Tae kwon do can do that--and it's fun, so kids will want to keep on practicing and learning. You'll see...this sport's not just about kicks and punches! How do you get children started--the right way? Choose the right teacher: Take your time, watch a class, and follow these hints before signing up. Know what to expect: Here are all the basic moves and positions kids will encounter--including the respectful bow that opens and closes every class. * Warm them up and build them up: get exercises that gently stretch the muscles for the workout ahead, and others to increase strength. * Detailed photos illustrate the correct techniques for making a fist, and a variety of blocks and kicks. * One by one, go through sparring positions and combinations, patterns suitable for competition, and valuable self-defense skills. Filled with inspiring photographs of kids executing the maneuvers, and endorsed by the American Karate and Tae Kwon Do Organization. 96 pages, 302 b/w illus., 6 x 9.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8Along with the standard side and roundhouse kicks, this Korean form of self-defense includes crescent kicks and spinning and jumping kicks that make it visually exciting to watch. This manual provides step-by-step instructions for learning these techniques and includes warm-up exercises, stances, and blocks. It also covers patterns (or forms), self-defense moves, and one-steps (drills), all of which reinforce Tae Kwon Do movements. Pressure points (places on the body where nerves are very sensitive) are also mentioned, and while no death grips are introduced, these and other self-defense moves should be used with caution. Sadly, the small black-and-white photos arent always clear enough to provide good instruction.Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library

3.0 out of 5 stars Tae Kwon Do for Kids, February 16, 2000

This review is from: Tae Kwon Do For Kids (Paperback)
I found this title rather diappointing. If you are the take it at home type and don't actually attend a Tae Kwon Do class you may find this helpful. Although I must say that the information is acurate. But anyone who attends classes and get this title will be disappointed as well. Mr. Yates is ususally a VERY good author, this book does not do him justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars great photos, clear message, March 3, 2003

This review is from: Tae Kwon Do For Kids (Paperback)
Filled with good information, illustrated with tons of good photos. This book is encouraging, as it shows girls and boys of all ages, sizes, and ethnicities (and all ranks) performing stretching, self-defense, and basic tae kwon do skills. It's written at a level kids can understand -- without insulting their intelligence. A great buy.
