5.0 out of 5 stars Fayetteville Academy Summer Reading Critique, August 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Taffy of Torpedo Junction (Chapel Hill Books) (Paperback)
Taffy of Torpedo Junction is one of the best books about WWII I have ever read! It was action packed, there was nonstop suspense, and it takes place in North Carolina where I live. One exciting part of the book was when Taffy and her grandfather heard someone screaming in the wind during a large storm. When they went out to the beach to see what it was, Taffy stepped on a German sailor's head! This book was filled with great humor and excitement. I never wanted to stop reading so I could find out what adventure Taffy was going on next. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good adventure about WWII on the Outer Banks

4.0 out of 5 stars History Summer Reading-Fayetteville Academy, August 28, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Taffy of Torpedo Junction (Chapel Hill Books) (Paperback)
TAFFY OF TORPEDO JUNCTION is about a 13 year old girl who lives on the Outer Banks off the N.C. coast during World War II. This book was exciting and easy to read. I would recommend this book to a friend because it gives the reader a chance to see how rough it was to live during a war. Taffy uncovers a group of German spies living on Hatteras and reveals their location.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential to a North Carolina Resident, January 4, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Taffy of Torpedo Junction (Chapel Hill Books) (Paperback)
In Taffy of Torpedo Junction by Nell Wise Wechter, Taffy, a Hatteras native, and her dog Brandy show incredible courage when facing Nazi spies on Hatteras. This book is based on true events that occurred on North Carolina's coast during World War II.
I think that Nell Wise Wechter did a phenomenal job in depicting the events that gave the Harker's Island area the name "Torpedo Junction". This book constantly kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next event. If you are a North Carolina native, or just live in North Carolina, this book is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars An adventurous girl living off Cape Hatteras., July 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Taffy of Torpedo Junction (Chapel Hill Books) (Paperback)
It was an excellant story about a girl,Taffy, who lived with her grandpa near Cape Hatteras during World War II. All the courage and adventures Taffy, her horse Sailor, and her dog Brandy have during this scarey time. Our favorite part was when Taffy was kidnaped by the Nazi spies, drugged, and tied up to be burned. But then Big Jens comes in and saves the day!! We talked about how dark it must have been when they had to put black cloth over their windows, and how they had no street lights. And how poor Taffy and her grandpa were but yet he let her keep the dog Brandy when she found him and how much love they had for each other.

The first time I experienced this book was back in 1980. I am a native of NC and my 5th grade teacher read this book to our class that year. I can remember the anticipation of waiting to hear what would happen next. Just this week I was the mystery reader for my oldest's 4th grade class. We could choose the book so I went on a hunt for this book. I remembered the title and as luck would have found it at my local library in Eagleville, PA. I checked out the book and read it again. It was as good as I remembered it. I read a chapter from the book to the class and they all seemed to really enjoy it. Two of the students were going to the Outerbanks for vacation this summer so they thought it was neat to hear a story about the area. This is a really good story that gives a good feel for life in the mid 1940's on the Outerbanks of NC. It also shows that WWII was closer to our shores than we may have ever realized! This is definitely a great book to add to your elementary reader's library.

This book is a fun read. It does a great job of painting the Outer Banks culture with an interesting story set in WW2. If you like to read and enjoy the OBX, you'll like this one. (It is for young readers, though.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Taffy of Torpedo Junction, September 28, 2009

This review is from: Taffy of Torpedo Junction (Chapel Hill Books) (Paperback)
Taffy of Torpedo Junction is the fascinating story of a free-spirited young girl who roamed the Outer Banks of North Carolina with her pony "Sailor" and her boxer dog "Brandy" during World War II. During this nearly forgotten early phase of the war, German submarines were freely sinking ships and oil tankers in the Graveyard of the Atlantic off of Cape Hatteras.
Taffy's inquisitive nature gets her involved with and captured by some enemy agents in the exciting finale of the story.
Written as Juvenile Fiction, Taffy can also be enjoyed by older persons with a young heart and an interest in an earlier American lifestyle on the undeveloped Outer banks.
Taffy was modeled after the life of an original native who still tells the story of her early years to summer tourists on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Parts of the narrative are written in the quaint old Elizabethan dialect that can still be heard in the smaller fishing villages along the coast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great powerful female heroine, August 13, 2007
This review is from: Taffy of Torpedo Junction (Chapel Hill Books) (Paperback)
As an Outer Banks resident, this book is almost required reading for any young boy or girl growing up on the islands. Now that I am older and moved to California I read it to my students every year. It is well written, informative and entertaining. It always hold my class's interest. It also allows me to go back to my own childhood once a year.
One of the things I love about this book is that it shows to young students, especially boys, that they can write about a female character with style and power. My male students become much less afraid and much more respectful of girls after I read this.
This is a wonderful book with great language and a fairly short read time. It can be read to someone in less than two weeks, or finished in a few days by a student on their own. Give it a try.
