About the Author

The Translator: Aisha Abdurrahman at Tarjumana Bewley is one today s most prolific translators of classical Arabic work into English. Aisha Bewley not only understands Arabic but she is also aware of the basic meanings and nature of teachings and history of Islam. Her knowledge is born of experience and direct transmission, not merely academic theory and learning by rote. For more than twenty-five years she has been concerned with making the contents of many classical works in Arabic more Accessible to English-speaking readers for the first time, including Ash-Shifa of Qadi Iyad.

I would highly recommend the Tafsir to everyone. It is not too long but at the same time gives a nice background and the context of the Ayats. The interpretation of the Ayats is also very well done. I was particularly happy to see that the interpretation of the Ayats was in bold letters while the background information and the author's own commentary (interspersed between the interpretation of the Ayats) was in normal (no bold) text. This makes it very easy to see what is directly attributed to the narrower interpretation of the Ayats and what is the author's own judgement regarding the broader explanation/context of the Ayats. The Tafsir comes highly recommneded by Sh. Hamza Yusuf in one of his lectures. I would recommend it very very highly.

A very popular exegesis due to the simplicity employed by the authors, the Imam Jalal ad-Din Mahalli (d.1459), who passed away before he finished it and his student the great mujaddid of the eighth Islamic century who finished it, Imam Jalal ad-Din Suyuti (d.1505). Hence it is referred to as the tafsīr of the two Jalals. This version by Fons Vitae has been translated by Dr. Feras Hamza (who is currently working on translating al-Baydāwī's tafsīr) but you can find an earlier version translated by Aisha Bewley published by Dar al-Taqwa. This tafsīr is beneficial for all but especially for beginners due to its accessibility. It is a straightforward commentary which is easy to understand and the clarification for verses is uncomplicated and clear-cut. For example, "Maintain the [five] prayers [by performing them at their appointed times]" (2:238), "God charges no soul save to its capacity [that is, what it is capable of bearing]" (2:286) and "[And mention] when God said, `O Jesus, I am gathering you [seizing you] and raising you to Me [away from the world without death]..." (3:55) It purposely lacks going in to detail as that was the objective of the authors, to give the readers a simple, accessible interpretation of the Holy Qur'an. I would recommend it to everyone as it is an excellent resource for understanding revelation, but do not substitute it for a teacher. This tafsīr is available on altafsir.com as part of a large project initiated by the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, Jordan.

The Imam has another tafsīr entitled, "al-Durr al-Manthur Fi Tafsir bil-Ma'thur" (The Scattered Pearls: Intertextual Exegesis) which is a lot more detailed as it explains each passage using ahadith, sayings of the Companions as well as the Tabi'in.

This translation is very well done. I did have a copy of Aisha Bewley`s translation but that was very disappointing because she left out main points of grammar. This boggles me because that's what you also want in it, the points of grammar, that's the jalalayn. I use use this one as a student of Arabic when I get stuck with the Arabic copy and improve my translating skills.

I was looking forward to using this text because of the recommendation of this version by Jalal Al-Din Al-Mahalli and Jalal Al-Din Al-Suyuti which was mentioned in Ismail Ebrahim's "Quran Made Easy".

The problem with this version is that it has an estimated 1624 pages and no linked table of contents, and I wasn't able to use the search feature to move to other locations in the book.

I would recommend that you not purchase this book until the TOC is linked and the search feature works to allow you to navigate the book easier.

The material itself looks very informative, it's a matter of getting to the information that limits my evaluation of this product.
