1.0 out of 5 stars extremely fragile
These jars are extremely fragile. I bought two and both have broken in the first month. I have so many other glass jars that are heavier and not so fragile. The glass is extremely thin. Very disappointing.

This clear glass canister is both high-tech and nostalgic, embodying the look of efficient modern design but also the warmth of grandma's cookies. Without the stainless-steel screw top and the ribbed glass (and slight imperfections therein), it would just be another storage can. I think the fact that the vertical ribbing is a little wavery is either due to a deliberate recreation of 1930s glass-manufacturing techiques, or a holdover of same -- probably the former. The screw top works well but there is no gasket, so don't expect a "Ball Jar" level of airtightness.

Not only is this a good deal, but by shopping around you can find its two little brothers, one of which has a 16 cup capacity -- one full (dry) gallon -- the other even smaller. I own all three and can tell you, they make a handsome and well-proportioned set. I saved about twenty dollars putting together the set myself (out of separate Amazon orders) as opposed to a well-known nostalgic/back to the earth oriented store and website that charges over fifty bucks for the set of three. These items are made in China.

4.0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for, October 31, 2011

These canisters are attractive and do actually hold an entire bag of product, which was my problem with most canisters you buy. I use the small ones for powdered sugar and corn meal, the medium one for sugar and the large one for flour. They do have a pretty large diameter, so if you are really cramped for counter space, they might take up too much room. They fit well on our standard sized counter. The glass is not perfect. It will have some small bubbles here and there, but doesn't really detract from the look, in my opinion. The lid screws on, so that might be a plus or a minus depending on your view. Technically, it does not have a seal either, but the lid, if threaded on properly, closes down pretty tight, so I'm not worried about moisture or bugs getting in. The big plus is the size so you don't have a mostly empty bag of flour or sugar sitting in you cupboard because the whole bag wouldn't fit the canister.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for brewing Kombucha, July 18, 2011

These jars are great for brewing Kombucha. I don't use the lids since Kombucha needs to breathe in order to ferment. These are the largest, most affordable glass jars I could find. I have 2. I don't think I could use these for storing food since the lid has a strange plastic smell. I wash the jars in the dishwasher but the lid is not dishwasher safe. I like the wavy look of the glass. Overall, these jars are great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for Pasta, March 26, 2011

As advertised and presented. I was looking for something tall enough to store long dried pasta like linguine, spaghetti, etc. A tad short but I will find other uses.

A very good price for this size jar. The glass is slightly warped on all three of these that I purchased, but the value is excellent and they work well for my purposes.

I purchased several of these jars, and was pleasantly surprised at their size and quality. The lid screws on easily, the glass is thick enough that it feels sturdy. These were the perfect addition to the new open shelving in my kitchen.

I got this jar for brewing sun tea on my new deck. It's cool-looking and holds lots of tea. Of course it's unwieldy to carry around when it's full of water or tea, but I knew it would be.

The only thing I dislike about the jar is the lid. It looks great, but it isn't a stainless-steel threaded lid: it's a plastic threaded ring with a stainless-steel cap loosely fitted on top. Mine almost immediately came apart (no, I didn't dishwash it), and as another reviewer mentioned it never had a gasket, so now it leaks and it can't really be tightened or loosened easily (the stainless-steel cap part just spins freely without moving the threads).

I still like the size and the glass and the look, so I'm putting up with the lid for now. :) I reckon it'd be fine for countertop use, dry goods, etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Not Air-tight or even Water-tight lid, January 31, 2012

The lid on this jar is a problem. It does not create even a reasonably tight seal. The lid is simply metal with plastic threading, there is nothing inside the lid to form a seal. The threads on the inside of the lid are plastic and not affixed very well to the metal shell of the lid, if it is indeed affixed at all. The first time I tried to tighten the lid I realized I was just spinning the metal shell and it was not really connected to the plastic threads inside it.

I suppose this jar would be acceptable for holding cookies or something but even in that case the screw-top lid is more of hassle than it is worth.

I have seen other reviewers mention storing coffee beans in this jar. Do not do this. Find yourself an airtight canister with a silicone or rubber seal. Even most cookie jars without a screw top will provide a better seal than this jar unfortunately.
