far and away the best option for beginners,

This is the best source for learning Tagalog that I have found. The structure of the language is difficult and counter-intuitive for English speaking learners, but this book manages to be grammatically thorough without becoming abstruse. The dialogues are interesting and the CDs are excellent quality. Books that teach more advanced Tagalog (Wolff's, for example) will be a quantum leap in difficulty, but a foundation course like this one is a confidence builder for going on to more difficult material.

I love this book because, I have been trying to learn tagalog for some time and this book has been a great help. Every chapter has a conversation in the beggining and this are actually conversations that are use in the every day life. Plus it has exercises that help you think in tagalog not just try to translate everything. Also the CDs are great aid, I just play them over and over and after it just comes back to me :). Any way I will recomend it.

my daughter wanted this book so she can converse with me without other people understanding what we're talking about. it's a good book where it gives a small quiz @ the end of every chapter. i sure wish that on the audio version - the tagalog conversation will have the translation after each sentence. it would have been a lot better that way. in any case, for the $$$ - it's a pretty good material.

Occasionally examples are used making use of grammatical constructions you haven't learned yet. You'll have to hunt around the find the explanations.
As annoying as that inconvenience is, the lack of accent marks is a real bummer. Yes, the intent of the course is to get the learner to hear and speak and not just read, but this isn't Pimsleur, the conversations (which are quite good, by the way) are detailed, and reviewing them without having the discs handy is, to my mind, a serious detriment.

Definitely a great resource to start with when you learn this challenging language. Both grammar and cultural aspects are adequately covered, and the book itself inspires to learn more as you read it!

I finally found a Tagalog language audio cd that has an handbook. My favorite part of the handbook is the "cultural notes". It talks about Phillipines customs, values and history.
