Book Description

Simone Bonnaire, a young French woman who lives in Tahoe, has a sadistic boyfriend who abuses her. Simone's only friend is Cynthia Rorvik, an older woman who provides comfort.

When Cynthia falls from her deck and ends up in a coma, her 92-year-old, former Olympic ski racer husband Joe Rorvik calls Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna and asks him to investigate.

McKenna discovers a string of deaths that look like accidents. But he can find no other connection between them until he learns that all of the victims opposed a new, proposed ski resort development in Tahoe.

As McKenna gets closer to a devious killer, he realizes that Simone is to be the next victim. But McKenna can't save her because she has left on a solo ski trek into the Desolation Wilderness, and she is unreachable except by the killer who has been following her and has already begun his final chase...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Tahoe adventure July 25, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just discovered Todd Borg in early June. After reading the latest Owen McKenna mystery, I cannot wait for the next one. After 11 adventures with Owen, Street, and Spot, I am hooked. If you love mystery/adventure/detective type stories, I advise you to buy Todd Borg. After reading all 11, I can't wait to go back to Tahoe and experience the locations around the lake. Another great read from Todd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Series - Familiar Characters August 31, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I am a reader of mystery series and like to gain a familiarity with the characters as I read. I have been a fan of John Corey and Mitch Rapp for many years. When a friend asked me if I knew Owen McKenna I responded that I did not; but I have resolved that situation. Eleven books later, Owen has become a friend and I have learned how he thinks and behaves. He continues to evolve and his acquaintances continue to expand the story. If you seek a familiar hero, then Owen is for you.

Owen doesn't work alone and the cadre of characters that participate in his adventures become familiar as they are not 'one and done' in this series. You will learn about Street's past and how she brings a sensitivity that Owen may not have. You will find Diamond an interesting cross between self-deprecation and responsible public servant. You will watch Jennifer grow up and provide Owen assistance that is beyond his means. However old Ellie is, she continues to make reappearances and help bring familiarity to Owen canine training requirements. And Spot, while perhaps slightly over personified, usually lopes (or licks) to the rescue however and whenever needed. Through these familiar characters the series grows and makes the next book even more anticipated.

For those readers that are familiar with the Lake Tahoe area the series provides a familiarity of a different nature. Each visit to this beautiful area also brings a face to the story that has been read. Todd Borg is a master of description and detail, something that makes the reading more enjoyable. I see things differently after reading about where Owen travels.

Some mystery series are predictable. Sometimes you read and while the story path wanders and meanders, the paved highway towards resolution is clearly marked.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get on with it September 24, 2013

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I like Todd Borg books because they are fun to read. Todd's take on the culture of Tahoe is right on. Spot, Owen,Street, characters are well developed and the plot was good and gripping, except I kept finding myself thinking get on with it. I am not sure why but it seemed to drag.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Mystery November 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Owen McKenna is back again breaking hearts, breaking jaws, breaking rules, and solving murders.

Murders that were made to look like accidents were plaguing this ski town, and all the reasons for the murders were pointing back to one man, Joe, who was opposing the building of another ski resort. Could this be the real reason or was it a diversion?

Why would someone want to hurt or kill anyone associated with Joe and especially his sweet wife? Joe had no idea, and Owen was on the trail as one person after another kept being eliminated. It wasn't an easy trail to follow even in ski country.

The characters are well developed as in Mr. Borg's other books, and most are likable and pleasant, especially Owen. The book also brought up domestic abuse and psychological issues along with the murders. Every facet was very well researched.

The tension of the investigation isn't one that will have you chewing your fingernails, but I liked it that way. It is a good mystery that will have you guessing until the end about who the murderer is. TAHOE CHASE has a good twist on who the murderer turns out to be. I thought I definitely knew, but did not guess correctly. I actually had two suspects in mind, and neither was correct. :)

TAHOE CHASE was an easy, smooth read with skiing as a major theme. If you are a skiing fan, you will be drooling over the details...they were phenomenal, but the skiing detail was a bit too much for me, though. It actually was overwhelming in the sense that it wasn’t of interest.

I am going to rate this book a 4/5. It is another good read by Mr. Borg.

This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the author in return for an honest review.

While the story line was good, the author kept describing various topics in minute detail. Too much detail. Leave a bit for the reader to piece out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Always an enjoyable read October 10, 2013
By Marie M
Format:Kindle Edition
This latest adventure in the Owen McKenna series is enjoyable as we loyal readers have come to expect. I won't go over the plot again, as too many reviewers already have. Instead, I will mention why I gave four rather than five stars to this fun book. I miss character development. The characters have simply stagnated in this adventure and also in the previous book; they could be any characters at all with little to distinguish any unique characteristics. When do we move on with Street's interesting life? How is Diamond's journey as a bicultural intellectual cop progressing? For that matter, even the dog Spot was unnecessary in this book. Author Borg is an excellent craftsman. I simply wish he would continue the human interest aspects of his books rather than simply focusing on adventure romps. He brought us interesting characters and seems to have stopped their lives in mid stream. Having said that, this is still a fun book in the enjoyable series.

Well written. I love the ties to the locale. Borg writes descriptively so that I felt I was there. The pace of the story was good, also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of your seat.
You are on the edge of your seat throughout. You think you know who did all these murders at different times during the book but you don't know until about the very end.

A very good mystery that you might not figure out till the end. I like a story with a lesson as well. This one can inspire a person to challenge themselves to try something new.

More About the Author

*UPDATE: As of February, 2015, Borg's books have over 2400 reviews on at an average of 4.6 stars.

Tahoe local Todd Borg is the author of the Owen McKenna Tahoe Mystery series, featuring Detective McKenna, his Great Dane Spot, and other fun characters. The books have gotten great reviews coast-to-coast, won awards like the Ben Franklin Award for Best Mystery of the Year, been chosen by Library Journal as one of the Top 5 Mysteries of the Year and more. But the main reason to check them out is that they are fast, entertaining reads with a lot of action and intelligent stories. The recurring characters will become your friends. Spot will become one of your favorite dogs. You'll love visiting Tahoe from your armchair. And the bad guys will make you... well, let's just say you will despise them. Borg has been waiting for you to give the books a try.

P.S. Spot says hi.

P.P.S. The order of the books is not critical. You can start with any title, and you won't feel that you're missing important information. In fact, Borg recommends starting with one of the last titles. (Authors like to think that they tell grander, more complex, and more nuanced stories as time goes by.) However, there are some readers who think these books reveal important character development when read in order. For those who are sticklers for continuity, here goes:

1 Tahoe Deathfall
2 Tahoe Blowup
3 Tahoe Ice Grave
4 Tahoe Killshot
5 Tahoe Silence
6 Tahoe Avalanche
7 Tahoe Night
8 Tahoe Heat
9 Tahoe Hijack
10 Tahoe Trap
11 Tahoe Chase
12 Tahoe Ghost Boat
