Learn A Little Tai Chi - And Get A Gentle, Effective Workout With Excellent Instruction, December 15, 2006
This review is from: Tai Chi Innerwave (DVD) [Slim Case]
"Tai Chi Innerwave" is an excellent exercise program for those looking for something more along the lines of a gentle, slow but most effective workout. And learn a little Tai Chi in the bargain. Not only that but I found this at Wal-Mart along with a couple of other workouts for a buck a piece. This Tai-Chi program uses postures and movement strung together with your breath, that give good isolated muscle movements for toning and burning fat(as opposed to carbs). There are three sections, each has a good 20 minutes of workout time that includes a warm-up, and each also has a prologue and an epilogue in which master instructor Joey Bond gives some bits of wisdom to be carried with you through your day.
In the first section, you'll do some basic moves. Lowering and rising as if you are moving in water. This one is called "Sink To The Earth", added on to that one is another movement,"Part The Wild Horse's Mane". This one is done with the leg movements only, and the instructor breaks down each movement slowly and precisly. The exercises are very easy to follow, as in each section the class(called players, and there are 2 others)is giving you a mirror image. I love this. It's much easier to concentrate on the forms, when they are using the exact image of you. Also in each session, Bond does a solo, so you can watch first, and then does corrections. He uses the other students to show where adjustments need to be made, to get the full effect. And he always seems to know exactly where the mistake is being made, as I find I have to correct myself as well.
In the second class, you'll be doing much of the same as the first as a bit of a refresher, but then he adds the arm movements to the exercise as well, making it a little more complicated and working some upper muscles as well.
Lastly, in the third class, he adds to the first to movements, a third called "White Crane Spreads Wings", which really opens up and works the upper torso. And in each class, Bond reminds us of the importance of proper breathing techniques, and to use your breath to flow through the movements.
I found these movements left me with a graceful and peaceful, yet powerful feeling. Giving me a renewed energy on sluggish days. I also felt like I was getting in a workout on days when I just didn't feel up to a rigorous routine or days my arthritis prevented me from other work outs. So this program would not be for those who say "No pain, no gain". It is for those needing a slower paced workout with a patient and excellent instructor. Although, it really is a good change of pace for everyone, as it may help in getting rid of or preventing a stress build up. Total time of the DVD is 75 minutes. You can do 1, 2 or all 3 workouts, depending on your own physical limits.
Oh by the way the other two workout programs I found for a buck at Wal-mart are 2 invigorating and slimming exercise programs with Suzanne Cox. "The Fix" a Dance Workout/and "Firm It Up", where she mixes up aerobics, dance and abs...see my reviews for details.
Happy Holidays to all, Remember to breathe, eat healthy(yes, even during the holidays)..and enjoy....Laurie
