5.0 out of 5 stars If you need inspiration April 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a fun read and not a dry step by step pictorial "HOW-TO". The book is more of a "WHY TO" or why many of us practice Tai Chi Chuan. Somewhere in your practice Tai Chi should provide you some bit of happiness. The author conveys that thought through his apparent love and enthusiasm for Tai Chi. The writing style makes you feel like you get to know the author, like you might get to know a teacher that you connect with and learn from.

There are plenty of tidbits and instructions given but that is something you really need to work on with your instructor(s) and the author makes sure you know this.

You can't learn Tai Chi from a book, you need teachers and other students to help guide you through the process.
You can find inspirational reason to get out, get started or continue practicing from this book. And that alone may make this book worth getting.

I say Great job to the author Phil Robinson for writing a book that conveys the joys of learning and practicing Tai Chi.

This book is a refreshing look at an ancient Chinese art. Author Robinson begins by introducing the reader to some of his students (people I would like to meet, and, in a couple of cases, "people I would like to BECOME"). The book is a also a great introduction to what tai chi is - from its beginnings as a survival skill for soldiers to a contemporary fitness technique that can be learned and practiced by ANYone - the young, old and infirm (including those among us with balance issues - both physical and mental). Robinson offers guidance for finding instruction and beginning. His style of writing made me laugh aloud while seriously examining the not-so-funny issues of living life in a 21st Century world. The book also provides a slender and accessible bridge across cultures.

Phil Robinson is directly responsible for my current study of tai chi. I've presented several people with copies of his (terrific) book...and some of the recipients have happily undertaken the study of tai chi, as well.

For those readers who have absolutely no interest in study of Chinese culture, physical fitness, emotional balance, or tai chi, this book is still a terrific read! It's an entertaining entree into Phil Robinson's most interesting world.

Note that the 5-star rating here is ONLY for the book and author - NOT for Amazon!

This is a wonderful book, filled with insight from a tai chi Master. It is clearly presented and presents esoteric concepts in an entertaining and easy-to-read manner. In fact, it would be perfect except for a manufacturing defect, apparently on the part of Amazon - a large, extremely annoying watermark "AUTHORHOUSE" across every single page, even the graphic illustrations at the end!

I googled the author, Phil Robinson, who told me that he had reported this to Amazon but that they had not done anything to resolve the problem and that there is no such problem with books ordered from Barnes and Noble!

I struggled with the number of 'stars' to leave in this review and finally decided to give it top rating because the content merits a five-star rating in spite of Amazon's apparent lack of concern about this problem. I am a long-time, usually highly satisfied Amazon customer, so this is extremely disappointing.

So do yourself two favors: (1) buy this book and read it; (2) buy it from Barnes and Noble... not from Amazon!

Loved this book! The author presents his information in a witty, warm, likeable way by drawing vivid pictures of friends and associates who he taught and learned from during his career in martial arts. He draws you into the world of Tai Chi in a way that keeps your interest and makes you want to explore it even more. This book is more than a dry how-to exercise program. Mr. Robinson presents Tai Chi as a whole life practice by introducing the reader to the history and philosphy of the art as well as by explaining the importance of diet, exercise & mental focus in the process of achieveing balance in life. His obvious love of the art of Tai Chi & his wise, warm regard for his friends & associates shine through in his narrative and make his book well worth reading.

Enjoyed the presentation. Detailed enough that the student could accomplish a number of goals. Answers many questions concerning the value of Tai Chi. Phil Robinson is a wonderful instructor.
