Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Tai chi is the preeminent mind-body exercise and practice. Using the theory and fundamental teachings of this book, the practitioner will achieve better health in body and mind. The book presents a thorough yet concise examination of the principal precepts of the art, furnishing the theory and practice of tai chi with a fresh perspective. This is not a "how to" book that shows postures of tai chi. There are hundreds of such books available on the market. This book instead deals with concepts such as mindfulness, movement of qi, the generation of jin, the interaction of jing, qi, and shen, proprioception, the mind-body connection, and development of gongfu.

In a unique approach, the ancient Chinese concepts are explained in a concise and understandable compilation of Seven Principal Precepts, using modern Western explication to make the terms accessible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best explanation of Tai Chi I've read, July 4, 2011

This review is from: Tai Chi Theory and Principal Precepts (Kindle Edition)
I've recently read Larry Costner's book, TAI CHI: THEORY AND PRINCIPLE PRECEPTS,and think it is the most useful and helpful description of Tai Chi I have read. I have several books on the subject and search the internet often for some tai chi insights and have found his book to be the clearest, most concise, no-fluff outline of basic principles around. I have been "playing tai chi" for just a few years and have accumulated several good tai chi ideas and "mantras" as I have learned but have never really gotten the basic foundation and seen the big picture. His book has been very helpful in pulling things together for me and has given me a nudge for my practice that I needed to move a little further along.

Thanks Larry, nice job...would like to see more helpful books from you

More About the Author

Larry Costner is a retired elementary school teacher who now teaches Tai Chi to adults. Tai Chi has a reputation as a means for stress reduction, mostly because of its reliance on using mindfulness - careful attention to the present moment - to affect the mind-body connection. His book, "Game On - The Game of Less Stress and More Contentment", reflects his interest in this topic. His premise is that mindfulness, while difficult to maintain, is worth the effort.
