I previously reviewed a King combination stone and gave it 5 stars. This was my first whetstone and I was impressed with the results. After working with the Taidea stone I must say that I like the Taidea much better for three reasons. First, the Taidea is much harder and wears significantly less than the King which is really quite soft. Due to its hardness Taidea is more effective and works faster producing a good edge on your knives even if you use a higher grit compared with the King. These stones are expensive, and slower rate of wear is much welcome. It also keeps the stone flat longer. Second, the wet surface of the stone quickly turns gray with metal abrasion from the knife blade even on the 5000 grit. This is good feedback for your progress which you don't get with the King where you just get a paste of the colored stone material as you work the knife. Third, Taidea comes with a silicone rubber base that really helps keep the stone in place. No such thing with the King.

I'M VERY HAPPY WITH MY KNIFE SHARPENER. NOW I DON'T HAVE TO WORK AS HARD WHEN SLICING MY VEGETABLES OR MEATS. THIS WAS A GREAT BUY. I RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE WHO ARE WILLING TO SHARP THEIR KNIVES.

My experience with this brand whetstone has been nothing but good I have four of them different grits of course but considering the price you are getting quality to rival the way more expensive brands, I am a prime member so some were even less cost I highly recommend especially for cutlary

Taidea 2000/5000: For a "water stone" compared to others, I would probably give it a 4 or even a strong 3, but for the price compared to others, it deserves a 5 for all around value. I have ceramic honing rods and strops to maintain my edges, so even my "dull" knives are still relatively sharp enough to cut, so if you need to reset a new edge on a really dull knife, or chipped edge, you'll need something in a lower grit to really be effective, but for bringing life back to an already established edge that just doesn't cut like it used to, on a basic knife, this stone will do quite well... My wife got it for me as a gift, (i picked it out but pur budget was tight), and I have since sharpened every knife I own on it which are appropriate for a corundum stone; basic stainless kitchen Knives, to standard folders in basic stainless alloys and carbons. It's not a bad basic stone for how cheap it is. I own diamond stones for reprofiling new edges and for sharpening my high alloy "super steels" (carborundum isn't hard enough to effectively cut the high volume of harder vanadium and niobium carbides in super steels, it "can" be done, just takes way too long), but this stone has managed to get all my basic Knives sharp enough to "cut" arm hair... Won't get them "shaving sharp", that's a whole nother level, but it'll get your basic steels sharp enough to cut some hair. I've even used it on my straight razors as a starter stone to reset edges before moving on to an 8000 and so on (by a different more expensive maker), and it works fine on them too to reset edges before honing them properly to shaving sharp.Read more ›

Seems to be a bit rough and bumpy in the area where they have their design on the white side of the stone but I'm trusting it to wear off. Width is great because it allows the full edge of my planer blades to be on the stone.

Definitely got my Calphalon Katanas back to super sharp status. This stone works well AFTER a mid 100's stone, otherwise the 2k/5k will take quite a while for a razor edged blade.

I also recommend using guides.
