A GREAT SKI PARKA? YES, BUT...., October 14, 2010
I recently purchased a Taiga Ellesmere down ski parka. It is beautfully made in every detail, and has just what I was looking for in a ski parka: lots of zippered pockets and stuff pouches plus an internal drawstring at the waist to retain body heat while also projecting a trim appearance outside. It is puffy but exceedingly light and appears to breathe, so much so that when you come indoors from the cold you don't immediately get overheated.
The only defect appears to be the hood with flap attachments on either side. With the hood up the flaps can be pulled across your neck and attach under your chin with velro -- all very neat and keeps you toasty. But when the hood is down there appears to be no way to roll it up out of the way and those two flaps on either side hang down over your shoulders and are lined with a fabric whose color is different from the jacket color. I would prefer either a zip-off hood or an arrangement by which you could furl both the hood and those two obstrusive flaps so that they don't get in the way and clash with the parka's color scheme.
