Tail of the Moon June 2, 2009
R to L (Japanese Style). Set in feudal Japan, a young woman is found with a huge scar on her back and no memory of who she is. She’s given the name "Kaguya" and taken in by a local brothel where she's put in charge of babysitting and housekeeping duties. Hanzou, the head guard of the nearby castle, starts to pursue her and realizes later that they’ve actually met before...and are enemies! (It turns out this young woman is one of Oda Nobunaga's daughters--Princess Sara.)In the second story, Oda Nobunaga sends Sara to infiltrate the ninja town of Iga to steal a secret gunpowder formula. She is to go under the guise of being the prospective bride of Hanzo Hattori, one of the high-ranking ninja leaders of Iga. Sara willingly goes along with the plan because she doesn't realize that she's got her Hanzo(u)s mixed up!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Tail of the Moon, the original medieval/romance/comedy series, probably wasn't crying out for a prequel, but fans of the long-running manga will probably find it gratifying. However, it exists at such a specific intersection of historical fiction, shonen action and over-the-top shojo melodrama that unless a reader demands all three, individual parts may fail to impress. During the warring states period in Japan, an amnesiac girl named Kaguya is taken in by a brothel and assumes the role of housekeeper in exchange for room and board. The only clue to her past is the wicked moon-shaped scar on her back, which also makes her unfit for the bordello bedroom. One day a rakish swordsman named Hanzou appears, and to everyone's surprise but the reader's, spurns the advances of the other girls for Kaguya's attention. It comes as no shock either that these two share a past or that against her better judgment Kaguya finds herself uncontrollably smitten. The manga sometimes struggles to strike a comedic tone, but most of the humorous elements seem unintentional. Ueda's art occasionally makes up for this, and her fight choreography shows significant virtuosity. (June)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Fluffy, June 7, 2009
This review is from: Tail of the Moon Prequel: The Other Hanzo(u), Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I haven't read much of the sequel to this manga, "Tail of the Moon," but I read this anyway because it was such a quick read.

While I may not be able to appreciate it as well as someone who's read the sequel, I did enjoy this manga. The story focuses mostly on the Romeo and Juliet type romance, but there's also a lot of action. It can be a little confusing when it comes to who's allied with whom and who's trying to kill whom, but this has more to do with Western unfamiliarity with Japanese history than with the quality of the manga. You may have to put a little thought into it, but there are notes in the back to help you figure it out. The art's also pretty, and the action seens are done well.

I liked the characters, too. Kaguya is a sweet girl, but she's also tough. She lets her feelings get in the way of what she's supposed to be doing sometimes, though. Hanzou is cute and funny, and he tends to sulk when he doesn't get his way. The two go well together, and the romance is enjoyable. I think I would have liked it even more if I had been familiar with the characters as they have more development in the subsequent series.

"Tail of the Moon Prequel: The Other Hanzo(u)" is a fun, enjoyable romance. It's fluffy and the story is nothing new, but it's sweet and entertaining. Fun for fans of the sequel and newcomers alike.

I have read and adored all of the Tail of the Moon series and was delighted to read the prequel about Hanzou and Sara. Their characters are fully established here, and you get a better appreciation for Hanzou. He shows true maturity and strength of character. Reading this makes you wonder if Hanzou is truly the careless womanizer as Hanzo claims or a younger cousin fighting to hold his own against a stronger and domineering older cousin. It makes me want to reread Tail of the Moon series now that Hanzou is cast in a new light. I just wish the book was more than one volume.
