Leo the Lop (Tail Three) (Serendipity),
By
This review is from: Leo the Lop Tail Three Serendipity (Hardcover)
ASIN B0043WKCTK - The book does not say where it was printed/manufactured and does not indicate an age range. Pictorial hardcover without dustjacket, 28 pages. Published by Grolier Enterprises Inc in 1980. By Stephen Cosgrove, illustrated by Robin James.
As winter arrives and covers everything with snow, Leo is bored. Everyone is asleep for the winter but Leo wants to play. After attempts to wake others and entice them to play fail, Leo meets an old owl who advises him to learn to entertain himself. That way, when Spring comes, Leo will be able to share the stories of his winter with his sleeping friends. It takes some time but, eventually, Leo discovers so many fun things to do that he is surprised to discover the first signs of Spring. When the others finally wake up, Leo has a lot of tales to share. Let's get the overly sensitive parents out of the way first. The squirrel says to Leo: "You woke us up so you could play some stupid game?" Leo mutters to himself: "Dumb old squirrel." And the birds say to Leo: "You must be nuts!" If that's going to bother you, pass this one by. The text is really well done, so well that it's very easy to forget you're reading about a cartoon rabbit and not an eight year old human child. It's great that Leo learns to play alone and that the message is restated in a short rhyme on the last page. And, if the story and the message aren't enough, there are the images. It's rare that I find a kids' book, outside the popular series and not based on a cartoon, where the images are this superb. The text and images alternate pages, so that every illustration gets an entire page. They're appropriately colorful (winter = lots of white, spring = lots of green) and capture Leo's adventures perfectly. From the wide-eyed innocent "will you play with me?" images to the end, where Leo is happily sharing his stories with a circle of friends, almost every one of these illustrations is a frame-able work. I only have two small annoyances. The "Lop" part of the title never gets explained, so only someone who knows what a lop eared rabbit is will make instant sense if it. And, when Leo first leaves him home, the text says he's wearing mittens and there are mittens in the illustration, but they're gone from that point forward. - AnnaLovesBooks

Leo the Lop Tale Three,
By
This review is from: Leo the Lop Tail Three (reissue) (Serendipity Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
I didn't realize that these books were classic. I however found them at Amazon used book sellers reasonably priced. These were one of my favorites stories as a child. The illustrations are adorable. I wanted to share them with my kids. I thought they would be good for my young readers. One child does not like to read. It's challenging enough for him to build his reading skills and have self confidence also. They just loved them. He made connections with real life situations. And They loved that the main charater was a lop eared bunny which we have. We are on a waiting list for a another and decided to name him Leo after Stephan Cosgrove's adventourus bunny. We had to order all four tales to complete our collection. We look forword to reading other Serendipity books. They are great! Also teach life experiences through a childs eyes at the same time.
