Gov't Mule "A Tail of 2 Cities",
By Gary Covington "Southern Rocker" (Louisiana, U.S.A.) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Tail Of Two Cities (DVD)
This is a true "Masterpiece" two concert, two disc, dvd of Warren Haynes and Government Mule performing at their very best. You get over 5 hours of excellent "Blues-Rock", "Jam-Band", "improvised" wonderful music. One concert was filmed in Boston, and the other in Chicago.
The line up consists of Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Matt Abts on drums, Danny Louis on keyboards and background vocals, and Andy Hess on bass. Concert One in Boston consists of a set list of 18 songs including an excellent drum solo by Matt Abts, and also an encore performance of "I'm a Ram". Some highlights include: "About to Rage", "Temporary Saint", "Sco-Mule", "Slackjay Jezebel","Blind Man in the Dark", and intermission and then more classic's include: "Devil likes it Slow", and an outstanding performance of "Lola Leave your Light On". Concert two in Chicago consists of a set list of 18 songs including some different songs from the Boston concert, plus an encore performance of "Reggae Soulshine" (which is outstanding). Other highlights include: "Mr High and Mighty", "Unring the Bell", "Rocking Horse", "Slackjaw Jezebel", an intermission and then additional classics of "32/20 Blues", "Time to Confess", "Mother Earth", "Gameface/Mountain Jam/Gameface/Power Outage/Gameface" (the power in the building is blown out, but the incident is still caught on back-up battery operated film - Warren plays drums during this incident" then the power comes back on and the band plays "Thorazine Shuffle". There is a bonus music video of "Million Miles From Yesterday". Both concerts are great! This double concert, double disc dvd is destined to become a classic. The music is wonderful. If you like "jam-band" blues-rock you'll love this one. I definitely recommend it.

Two tails, one great mule,
By Bodhi Heeren (Copenhagen) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Tail Of Two Cities (DVD)
Two wellfilmed, great sounding shows from one of the finest, most interesting live bands around. The first show from the "Deja Voodoo" tour in 2004 and the last show from the "High And Mighty" tour in '06.
Unlike the gorgous "The Deepest End" this is just the Mule doing what the do best. Playing in front of an audience and mixing wellcrafted, meaningful songs with intelligent, mindblowing jamming. And blending blues, southern rock, psychedelics, jazzfusion. The versatile Warren Haynes, a prolific songwriter and master guitarist is at the center, supplemented by long time partner, the extraordinary Matt Abts on some powerful and subtle drums. Danny Louis displays some weirdness at the keys. These shows are also a kind of farewell to bassplayer Andy Hess, who left the band in autumn '08. Not as prolific and charismatic as the late, great Allan Woody, Andy is a very fine technical and funky player. Although neither show may be the Mule at their shining best this is certainly an essential release for everyone into true spontaneous and creative Music.

+5 hours in guitar heaven.,
By Gameface1973 (Madrid, Spain.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Tail Of Two Cities (DVD)
This is one of the best music dvd's I've purchased in my whole life. I've always been a fan of Mr.Haynes & Mighty and this two disc set is priceless if you're into blues-rock guitar. The audio and video quality is outstanding and the songs are amazing. A few songs are present in both discs but these are different interpretations of the tracks showing the evolution of the Mule over a span of two years.
Mr. Haynes (I can't help feeling a sense of reverence when I mention his name) is himself larger than life, and if you're a guitar player you'll appreciate the chance to see excellent camera closeups on his hands performing wizardry on the fretboard, and eventually figure out some of his distinctive techniques and approaches to blues-rock. Totally worth buying. The first thing I did after I watched the two dvd's was to back them up. Tip for caring wives: If your man likes this type of music, this makes for a great gift. He will love it!!
