Editorial Reviews

Review

Tailgate to Heaven is a damn entertaining read and certainly not just for tailgaters. It’s Hunter Thompson meets Jim McMahon meets Marco Polo with a beer funnel.”—Lee Hurley, editor in chief, Tailgater Monthly magazine

“You’ll laugh at the adventures detailed in the coming pages, and you will rejoice in the way Americans from sea to shining sea welcomed Adam into their ranks, particularly during the much-celebrated pregame tailgate parties. You might even cry, but only if you happen to catch sight of Adam’s credit card bill.”—From the foreword by Neil Reynolds, copresenter for NFL coverage, Sky Sports, and writer for NFLUK.com and SkySports.com

“Throughout his travels and in the pages of this book, Adam Goldstein approaches the subject with the curiosity of an anthropologist and a comic’s eye for the absurd, as he tries to make sense of—and make a case for—American football and the world of red cups and free T-shirts.”—From the foreword by Karen DiEugenio, writer for YourTailgateParty.com and author of I Got Your Tailgate Party Right Here!

“The uniquely American pastime of tailgating has developed its own lifestyle and customs rarely experienced by foreigners. In Tailgate to Heaven, Adam Goldstein takes you on his journey from British football fan to hardcore tailgater in one NFL season. You may think you know the culture and lifestyle that is tailgating, but until you have viewed the NFL parking lots through Goldstein’s eyes, you won’t have the complete picture.”—Dave Lamm, founder, TailgatingIdeas.com

“Adam Goldstein’s passion for American football and determination to succeed in his ambitious quest shines through and takes the reader on a unique, char-grilled American road trip. He’s thrown open the doors and dropped down the tailgate on a face-painted world where socializing, hospitality, and having a great game day are the most important things—sometimes even more important than football itself.”—Nick Richards, author of Touchdown UK: American Football before, during, and after Britain’s Golden Decade

“It’s no wonder Americans took to Adam as he went on his journey: like the settlers who travelled west across the United States, he is a pioneer. Tailgate to Heaven is not just an enthralling paean to the NFL, its fans, and its delicious BBQ food—it’s an inspirational tale of what one man with a dream or a goal can accomplish. Adam Goldstein, we salute you.”—Ben Isaacs, ShortList magazine

“Adam Goldstein is the Alexis de Tocqueville of tailgating: the foreigner who comes to chronicle our curious cultural practices with both a critical eye and the fascination of a school boy. Goldstein brilliantly exposes just how crazy—and cool—our devotion to the party before the game truly is to the outside eye.”—Kerry J. Byrne, publisher, ColdHardFootballFacts.com

"I have tailgated at 870 games, and I can tell you that Adam Goldstein has captured the community spirit of tailgating with immense passion."—Joe Cahn, Commissioner of Tailgating

As a long time, avid tailgater and NFL fan, I was honored to think that Adam, while on his trip through the U.S. would be stopping by our tailgate prior to our Monday night football game vs the Bears. It was a day and night I will never forget. First, because we got to meet and entertain Adam for a short while and, second, because the game ended with one of the greatest comeback wins in NFL history by the Chicago Bears.

I purchased the book while Adam was doing his signing here in Phoenix. And, without a doubt, for anyone who is a tailgater or NFL football fan, to read what Adam went through to complete his goal is nothing short of amazing.

The book is a great read and introduced me to many of the legendary "characters" who make up the NFL fandome.

My goal, one day, is to be invited into the PFUFA and to be able to personally meet all of the GREAT fans and tailgaters described in the book.

It is a must read, very entertaining and I still can't believe Adam was able to do it.

And Adam, thanks for our mention in the book - that is a real honor.

Great account as Adam from the UK Tailgates his way through the NFL. I was honored to have him come but our spot in Oakland and join us for a drink and a bit of food in the BLACK HOLE. A must read for any football fan. Outstanding.

I have been an avid football fan and tailgater since 1998. When I heard about Adams journey, I had to get the book. What surprised me the most was that you don't have to be a football fan to understand it. Adam did a great job of explaining what it is like to dream of doing something and then actually making that dream a reality. What an inspiring story.

Hey everyone!
My Name is JB Miller,
Adam Goldstein is a man on a mission. This mission is told first hand from in the book.

Despite being a Tailgater myself. Despite being a Football fan. Despite hating books written in this genera. I LOVED THIS BOOK! I usually never read books about football. I read so many sports articles I don't need to. But Adam does an amazing job in this book. His story from page 1 sucks you right. It's not just the way he tells the tale. It is the tale itself.
From childhood obsession, to teenage love, to adult passion you follow Adams desires for NFL. That is only in the first 2 or 3 chapters. Once the road trip starts you get swept up in a whirlwind. Learning about a side of NFL you may have only observed but been to scared to dabble in.

Look Adam is brilliant, plane and simple. For those of you who want to get your wife into football or even just an understanding. You should let them read the book as well. There is a very good sub plot between Adam and his Girl Friend.

I want to write so much more but that would require me to ruin this book for you. Listen! BUY THIS BOOK! Find a friend who has it and borrow it. THEN BUY IT! Just read it!

I know next time I go tailgating outside Cincinnati I'll be bringing Adams book with me as my guide.

I also learned a lot about British Football. To be honest like Adam... I still don't see the appeal.
