Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Although excelling in many popular genres, including science fiction, war, and crime, the legendary EC comics were most notorious for their horror titles, which revolted the nation’s tastemakers in the 1950s. And while other EC artists were moodier or spookier, Jack Davis’ stories stood out for their distinctly cartoony tinge, leavening the terror with a mocking humor. In these compact tales, each introduced by the pun-obsessed Crypt-Keeper, greedy businessmen, jealous husbands, and cheating wives meet grisly fates, graphically depicted, at the hands of their revenge-seeking victims or from werewolves or vampires. EC’s emphasis on text-heavy captions and verbose dialogue balloons—sometimes taking up more space than did the illustrations—did a disservice to its talented artists. Davis’ skill would be better displayed in subsequent decades as one of the country’s leading commercial illustrators. Although amassing 25 of these stories accentuates their formulaic nature, especially the reliance on sub-O. Henry twist endings, they remain entertaining six decades later, or as the Crypt-Keeper would put it, “There’s no ghoul like an old ghoul.” --Gordon Flagg

Review

“Davis was a master in the horror comic Crypt of Terror line. … Davis went on to mainstream success, with thirty years at Mad Magazine, public interest posters, and an armful of awards. Even so, the screaming lady who experiences unimaginable horror as her respectability and life drain away will always remain his signature.” (Paul Buhle - Rain Taxi)

The most haunting in my mind is a story called 'Telescope' which alone makes this book worth purchasing.

If you're rich and a student of comic art, of course you oughta get this. But for my dollar, the color format which reproduces the garish feeling of the original issues is more essential. But if you want to study high quality inked, black & white technique of master comic artists like Davis and Craig, you can't go wrong with this series.

This book is beautiful. A solid representation of Jack Davis contribution to Horror. His sheer output during the heyday of EC Comics could fill several volumes, but this cross section of pieces not only reflects his talent, and the obvious influence he has had over the decades on other artists, but also represents the days before the dreaded comic code authority and their censorship of the medium. The Jack Davis biography and the history of EC that bookend this amazing collection provide a nice lens to view this art through, but the real meat of this meal, is the actual synthesis of story and art on display in 25 gems of illustrated horror. One final note, this book is one of 4 already released in the Fantagraphic line, each spotlighting a different artist, with two more scheduled for release. Amazon did a good job of protecting the product during shipment this time. The cover is prone to corner damage if not packaged correctly and a previous volume arrived a little blunted. This copy arrived mint, with adequate packaging and in better condition than I find in most book stores. I recommend this to any fan of horror, comics, or the history of the medium.

OK! We get it negative reviewers, you want COLOR, but your not going to get it at this price so quit writing low reviews of these Editions!! They have two things on Amazon: 'LOOK INSIDE' and several purchaser REVIEWS! Do your homework before giving 'shoddy' reviews about the absence of COLOR!! Now, about this great Black & White Hard Cover book! Other than other EC Comic Hard Cover archive books (which are great in their own right), this one is quite a long read with tons of narrative and dialogue. The old Vault Keeper opens each story with his corny puns of course but the stories are almost all excellent. The most haunting in my mind is a story called 'Telescope' which alone makes this book worth purchasing. Without giving too much away, it's a story of survival of the fittest between a stranded seaman and large ship rat that swam to shore together ending up on a deserted sand island with absolutely no food or water and both dying of starvation. Pretty soon they decide to attack and eat each other but the man refuses to sleep and the large rat refuses to back off. The ending is so bizarre and gruesome like a car wreck but you have to see it to believe it. It kind of bothered me for days and I've never seen anything like it before in a horror comic and I've read most! Buy this book, it will give you hours of creepy pleasure with great stories and fantastic artwork!

EC were a staple of my reading diet when I was growing up, and Jack Davis was a real favorite (along with Graham Ingels). Here are Jack's stories from Tales From the Crypt........one can easily see the development in his work and the Crypt-Keeper's image as well. The Al Feldstein stories (he wrote most of these) grip a person and rivets them to the flawless story telling that Davis provides.
Some will complain, I know, that these are printed in black and white. But don't let such feeling mar your purchase of this volume. Davis's superb line-work is readily evident w/o the color. Reasonably priced and a great bargain. Get yours today!
