Ingrid Langley and her husband, Patrick Gillard, were agents for Britain's MI5. Now retired, Ingrid has taken up a successful second career as a scriptwriter, but Patrick is having trouble finding something interesting to do. He is still young, so when the opportunity arises to join the police, he is delighted--until he finds out that he will become the superior officer of his longtime friend, DCI James Carrick. His concerns over what the new arrangement will do to their friendship are pushed aside when three bodies are found hanging upside down in a local barn. It's Patrick's first official police case, and it's a dandy. Even with Ingrid's help on the investigation, all clues seem to lead to dead ends. This is a competently written, creatively plotted British mystery that will make a solid addition to larger collections. Emily Melton
