Perhaps others will have different needs, but I found this map not particularly useful as a tourist to Taiwan.

I had been hoping to get a full-size map of Taiwan as a whole. To my disappointment the map of the whole island offered here is rather small -- only 18 inches from northern to southern tip. The majority of space is devoted to local maps of Taipei, Taipei Area, Kaohsiung, Kaohsiung Area, Taichung, Tainan, Taroko Gorge, and Sun Moon Lake, plus a diagram of Taipei's metro system (MRT).

The local map of Taipei is a detailed street map of central Taipei. It is identical to the detailed street map found in the "Taipei Travel Map" by the same publisher, except that the latter map covers a larger area (13.2 x 10.0 km versus 9.4 x 10.0 km) and includes a street index. I recommend buying the latter map. The map being reviewed has no index of any kind.

I had hoped when buying this map that place names would be labeled in both English and Chinese. In this I was also disappointed. On the detail street maps, the names of major streets and cities and districts appear in both English and Chinese. But aside from that Chinese labeling is absent.

I found one error in the MRT diagram (Bannan line does not currently go to Nangang Exhibition Center) In any case, visitors should check the online map at the Taipei Metro web site because new lines continue to be added.

To sum up, this map was not of much use to me. For getting around Taipei I used the "Taipei Travel Map" by the same publisher. I didn't spend much time in other cities, and for those the maps in my guidebook (Rough Guide) sufficed. In addition, some excellent maps of the island are available for free at the visitor information booth in the arrival area of Taoyuan Airport.

The map has an attached cardboard cover (4.25 x 10.25 inches) which is an annoyance if you were hoping to fold it up and put it in your pocket.

After having this map for a while I realized it has hotels and other great features listed for Taipei. I am very glad I purchased this.
