I was not familiar with this work until I heard it on the BBC (as a request from another listener). The Ode to Birds and Rainbow is a work written in remembrance of the death of composer Takashi Yoshimatsu's sister. It is colorfully orchestrated and has some beautiful moments. This is not "hard core" accademic music, but it never dips into sugery new age sentimentality, either. It is well-played and recorded, and serves as a good introduction to this composer's oeuvre.
