5.0 out of 5 stars Take Alongs the better choice for kids
My little guy loves Thomas and we started him on the wooden railway sets that you see in toy stores and bookstores. However I recently discovered "take alongs" . These toys are indeed smaller than the "wooden railway" line of Thomas toys but they offer several advantages to kids and parents alike:

3.0 out of 5 stars Oops???
I ordered these trains to add to my son's (23 months) collection for his upcoming second birthday. I was disapointed to find that the "take along" trains are only half the size of the regular Thomas and friends engins. They will not work on the train table we bought him for his birthday. He loves trains so much that I am sure he will still enjoy them on the floor, I just...

My little guy loves Thomas and we started him on the wooden railway sets that you see in toy stores and bookstores. However I recently discovered "take alongs" . These toys are indeed smaller than the "wooden railway" line of Thomas toys but they offer several advantages to kids and parents alike:
1. They are more detailed than the wooden railway pieces.
2. They cost a lot less (usually about half) than the wooden trains.
3. The take along sets ( buildings, etc) are much cheaper than wooden railway items.

Diesel is a favorite of my son and we have both wooden and metal versions. The wooden diesel has no relief (flat decals only), no transparent windows and is easy to mistake for wooden Mavis, a similar Diesel. Take along diesel has molded detailing much more like what your child sees on TV. He costs less and has a nice weighty heft ( a drawback if your child throws it)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well built toy with nice details, May 4, 2010

Let me begin by stating that my 2.5 year old cannot go anywhere without his choo choos. He just loves Diesel. This train makes sounds when he's moving and toots his horn when a button on top is pressed. The toy feels like it is made of mostly metal and it is one of the few toys I have purchased recently that feels like it was built solidly enough to withstand a toddler boy. We do not have the table set, but my son pushes these by hand all over the floor and on tracks we have from another toy. $6 well spent... I wish I could find a whole set of this series.
