4.0 out of 5 stars This broke some kind of ground., October 9, 2006
This review is from: Take As Needed for Pain (Audio CD)
Quite loud and akward, words cannot really describe it.
They have a sound all their own. Like said - "disturbance" is very creepy. Your woofers may not survive the bass in this CD. It is not some "bass" CD per se, but the bass is killer.

The overall sound is very powerful, yet not real fast. All the noise of speed metal without the speed.
It is good, but do not even try to understand the format of the lyrics. They are there, but not in order.

5.0 out of 5 stars fall down at the alter of Sabbath worship..., January 6, 2005

i cant possibly reccommend this disc highly enough.as many other reviewers have mentioned, this is one of the founding fathers of "sludgecore".Fat,thick really slow ala Melvins guitar tones crawl over everything in its path.the melvins reference stops here, though,as they more or less are making fun of metal whereas Eyehategod are morphing it into something even more sinister.in other words,HEAVY.seriously, this disc has some of my favorite riffing of all time.you have been warned....

5.0 out of 5 stars Now every human being has to go through some suffering, January 20, 2003

Anyone unfamiliar with the sheer power that surges through every second of every EYEHATEGOD song has no idea of the potential of the genre. No other band has EVER been able to portray pain and depression like this before. EVER. This is the album to first experience EHG, thier "fast" album, where thier punk influence bears it's ugly head. I first heard them when I downloaded "Blank." The resounding feedback, the opening riff ending in a scream; 10 seconds into it, I was hooked. This was the sound I had been looking for. This was the band. This IS the band. Buy this album. It is still my favorite today; I listen to it at least once a week. I will warn you now, you will be able to understand more of the lyrics on this album than on any of thier others. Which will be about 12 words. EHG is the soundtrack to ANY and ALL emotional catastrophe. You may have no idea what he's saying, but I guarantee you, when you hear Mike's tortured agonizing screams against the pounding beat and screeching feedback, you will know EXACTLY what he means.

5.0 out of 5 stars real, March 14, 2010
blues and hardcore merge in one of the most furiously nihilistic albums ever, with just enough black humor and swinging NOLA groove to avoid the self-indulgence of newer bands in this style like soilent green. it's funny how doom metal bands who write about real life are always the darkest and most disturbing.

4.0 out of 5 stars good record, could use more variation, July 15, 2005
This review is from: Take As Needed for Pain (Audio CD)
Opening with probably the best song on the album, "blank," 'take as needed for pain' is a good album with a screeching dirty vocals, nasty lyrics, and a band that shifts between heavy hardcore crossover and heavy blues driven sludge. some of the riffs are really great, with good use of the blues scales, but a lot of them sound very similar. i like how some of the songs start with a great bass line, but usualy the songs wear thin after a while. still its a good sludge record, but i prefer Grief.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best doom/sludge metal album of all time bar none!, September 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Take As Needed for Pain (Audio CD)
This is one of the best metal albums of all time.No doubt Eyehategods finest work. If you could only have one of their albums this is the one to buy.I will warn you that it is not fast, so if you like balls out grindcore like repulsion and terrorizer this wont be your cup of tea. If you like slow rockin, groovy but heavier than anything else in the market with a touch of the south do not pass this one by, and if you get a chance to see them live, they put on one of the best shows ive seen so check em out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kill Your Boss, August 1, 2001
This review is from: Take As Needed for Pain (Audio CD)
Eyehategod is the only current band that has the undeniable Southern groove, and even better they sometimes incorporate punk into their brand of sludge, topped off with some ear bleeding feedback. This is highly recommended to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Forget Your Medicine, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Take As Needed for Pain (Audio CD)
Sludge metal is one of the most unique and defying forms of music out there, and it was also some of the first music to come out there. Ever since Black Sabbath established the genre with their signature "Sweet Leaf" song, it has gotten respect, especially from the South.

Eyehategod is one of these bands, and mixed the sludge sound with elements of 80's hardcore punk to make something that broke barriers in the underground. True, they may not be as diverse in their music as say, Acid Bath or Soilent Green, but their music played a major role.

Downtuned guitars, slow tempos and riffs make Eyehategod who they are. Music by stoners for stoners. It's brilliant. "Shop Lift" and "White N*gger" are just two examples of the brilliance of this CD. And note, the production isn't good, but why even bother? If you enjoy it slow, sludgy, and full of depth, "Take As Needed For Pain" is your prescription.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Bower Power, May 5, 2006
This review is from: Take As Needed for Pain (Audio CD)
Out of all the EHG albums this one stands out the most and the only one you really need.Note that none of there albums suck its just that this one is the essential.Ifit comes down to purchsing one of there albums get this one and if they dont have it get Dopesick instead. So what do you get from an EHG album? Sick sludged out undecipherable vocals downtuned slightly distorted bass lines and feedback and guitar riffs more brutal than a Crowbar album. The albums excellent with White N*gger,Kill Your Boss,30 dollar bag, every song is great especially the hillarious Laugh It Off.Only problem i have with the album is theres no lyrics with such funny awesome songs names you wanna know what Mikes saying.Threw out the whole album i could only make out the following....Vagina, i wanna get high,as well as her warm piss.Yeah if you like sludge doom you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.
