Book Description

April 1998
This award-winning quilter demonstrates her novel, simplified technique, Take Away Applique. Step-by-step color photographs illustrate this new technique along with simple directions. Her unique way of quilting without a frame or hoop will surprise you. Sheer graphic impact, diversity of blue-ribbon quilt designs, insights into the creative process, and technical hints for improving one's next quilt are included. Wonderful patterns and easy-to-follow directions are sure to inspire you to applique Suzanne's way. AUTHORBIO: Suzanne Marshall traces her development as a quilter to a library book and her collection of fabric scraps, gathered through many years of making clothes. Her first quilts were utilitarian, increasing in size with the growth of her children. Only in the mid-1980s did this self-taught quilter begin to design decorative quilts. She entered the first local contest in 1985 and her first national competition in 1988. Recognition came rapidly after that. REVIEW: At first glance, the striking appliqued quilt on this book's cover speaks to beautiful traditional symmetry. Then you notice that some of the quilt's carefully appliqued motifs are actually insects, clever additions to a work appropriately titled Don't Bug Me! A self-taught quilter, Marshall uses her own 'take-away applique' technique for accurate placing of applique pieces. Here she leads the reader through this technique in step-by-step fashion...

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

At first glance, the striking appliqued quilt on this book's cover speaks to beautiful traditional symmetry. Then you notice that some of the quilt's carefully appliqued motifs are actually insects?clever additions to a work appropriately titled Don't Bug Me! A self-taught quilter, Marshall uses her own "take-away applique" technique for accurate placing of applique pieces. Here she leads the reader through this technique in step-by-step fashion and also describes her method of quilting without a frame. This book deserves a wider audience of quilters than the word "applique" in the title would suggest. Included are 50 pages of motifs and patterns to be used as building blocks for the reader's own designs. Highly recommended for quilting collections.

About the Author

Suzanne Marshall traces her development as a quilter to a library book and her collection of fabric scraps, gathered through many years of making clothes. Her first quilts were utilitarian, increasing in size with the growth of her children. Only in the mid-1980s did this self-taught quilter begin to design decorative quilts. She entered her first local contest in 1985 and her first national competition in 1988. Recognition came rapidly after that. She has received many coveted awards, among them a first place in professional applique and the Gingher Award for Best Hand Workmanship at American Quilter's Society shows; grand prizes for three consecutive years from Better Homes and Gardens Books, awarded at International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas; and first prize at Quilt Expo III in the Hague, Holland. Her quilt Soul Of Medieval Italy was featured in an exhibit at the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. Suzanne was born in Joplin, Missouri, and moved to Huntsville, Texas, at the age of 10. After completing her degree in elementary education at LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, she taught elementary school in Arcadia, California, and New York City. After moving to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1966, she devoted her attention to her husband, Garland, and their family of three sons and a daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take a close look at this book, January 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Take-Away Applique (Paperback)
Anyone who has ever shyed away from applique should look closely at Suzanne Marshall's book Take Away Applique. Suzanne's clear step-by-step explanations could unlock the mysteries of this art form for you as it did for me. Her lovely naturalistic patterns, which include flowers, butterflies, caterpillars, hummingbirds, and many many other charming creatures, make practice a pure joy. Suzanne is an award winning quiltmaker who shares with us the judge's comments about her quilts. We get a close-up look at what judges look for and how "subjective" judging can be. I LOVE this book, the format is so friendly, honest, open and encouraging. With this book anyone can master applique adn learn to make beautiful quilts that will please and bring joy to the harshest of all quilt judges....yourself. Michelle Sargent

5.0 out of 5 stars Bitten by Suzanne's bugs!!, June 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Take-Away Applique (Paperback)
I am cursed!!! This morning at 5:30 I am up working on an applique piece consisting of "bugs". Suzanne's book is marvelous. I am so inspired to try all of her suggestions. Quilting pox is bad enough, but now I have insect pox also. Suzanne has given me the freedom to do my own thing. I have hidden my work before because it wasn't done by traditional quilting standards. Bah, Hum"bug" to that! I treasure my autographed copy of Take-Away Applique as not only a techniques guideline, but also as an insight into a healing exercise. All artists will appreciate the diary form of this book as Suzanne progresses through each piece.
