5.0 out of 5 stars a jazzy funky groove
#10 is probably my favorite cut on the CD but it's so hard to pick a favorite! the entire CD is phat. it reminds me of loose ends with their blend of "jazzy funky grooviness." it's good ANYTIME music...because anytime is a good time to groove.

i had the pleasure of seeing cooly's hot box perform live in Detroit recently and this crew is no joke. check them...

3.0 out of 5 stars SOOO OVERHYPED
For all the raving Ive heard about this band, I expected sooo much more from them. I tend to agree with the reviewer... Theyre not bad, theyre okay, but its just that. Okay. Theres nothing new, fresh or different here. Theres also nothing particularly interesting about the lead singer's voice.

I venture as far as to say Cooly's is a poor man's Brand New...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Sound, September 17, 2002
This review is from: Take It (Audio CD)
This cd was a hit with the early 4o's set and a group of college seniors at a recent get together. There is enough r&b and soul, for the older crowd and hip hop for the younger crowd. Great variety and pretty good vocals. I would reccomend this cd for a trip outside the norm

I knew of this group from an Independent sampler. I happened In the record store and just bought it! I'm glad I did. Great album in the tradition of Brand New Heavies and Incognito. The is a great blend of Jazz junk and soul. Something greatly missing in mainstream.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Take It is Iced with Jazz...some Dig It Vibes!", January 29, 2002
This review is from: Take It (Audio CD)
If you like Groove with a Funky Beat...iced with Jazz...a smidgen of Dance...light touch of R&B...this New York group compared to the "Brand New Heavies"...blends style and tone of Stevie Wonder--Earth Wind & Fire--collective Jackson Five...how about that for some good company to hang out with!

Each track has a distinctive mood...with some stand outs ~ "FRIEND OF MINE", enticing creative beat, gets under your skin and moves you---"HAPPY FEELINGS", probably one of the best cuts on the album, lead vocalist Angela Johnson interpretation of each lyrical passage ends on a positive note, gotta love it!

Entire cast of Cooly's Hot-Box is first rate...a different sound blends the colors of Funk and Latin...with harmony from individuals who seem to enjoy what they're doing...making us the
FANS Happy...which brings us back to HAPPY FEELINGS!

Total Time: 64:59 on 15 Tracks ~ Purpose/Higher Octave OMCD-11272 ~ (2002)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album, December 12, 2005
This review is from: Take It (Audio CD)
Album is not really not that bad. I heard about this group from a friend of mine, he sent me a mix tape with their music on it. To me this band sounds nothing like Incognito, they have their own sound.

I like "Happy Feelings."

5.0 out of 5 stars Irresistible..., March 17, 2002

A lil' bitta Soul, Funk and Jazz..what more could you ask for? Great production throughout. Just got this CD and its worth the wait fe'sho. If you dig some of that EWF, Mint Condition, Young Disciples, Brand New Heavies, Rufus etc..then this is definitely kickin' it...and another thing, if none of the bands mentioned above sound familiar to you..then stick to country or blue-grass.:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Stripped down , understated....., June 28, 2002

think of a HEATWAVE for the new millenium-BBQ is fine-but the pork will kill you. Nary a horn on the 15 tracks, the underproduction takes the funk, vocals and musicianship to the fore. It's Alright-the current single, builds to a head bobbin/hand clapping crescendo into Simple, another stripped to the bone groove-each Hot-Box track is different in personality. Take Me Home Tonight is a Fat Larry's Band disco refugee, with a nice breakdown at the end, Make Me Happy will likely be the next single and track 10 Wasted Time is simply one of the best Urban tracks I've heard in 2002-think of Heatwave's Mind Blowing Decisons or Ain't No Halfsteppin updated for 2002. This cd was released in January and is starting to blowup in the summer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mellow and Enjoyable!, December 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Take It (Audio CD)
The bottom line is that this cd is pleasant and enjoyable. There is nothing wrong with the lead singer's voice. It brings back true vocal talent...SOUNDS GOOD BEFORE ANY EFFECTS OR ENHANCEMENTS. The way good music used to be. Not a whole lot of electronica, either. Don't trust the CDNOW Reviewer, they must have had a bad day...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Tight Soul Band, February 7, 2002
This review is from: Take It (Audio CD)
Another reason why you should pay more attention to the music in the UK, because it was an UK internet radio show that I first got a taste of this band from NYC. Compared to alot of past artist and groups CHB holds it down when it comes to putting together a complete soul album. The CD offers dance tracks, slow tempo and tracks to just kick back and vibe to. Angela Johnson blows magic at the lead vocals and the band creating the smoothest tracks from funk bass to disco soul. Grab this one if your CD player is yawning from boring music.
