Book Description

February 26, 1998
One in three people have a fear of flying. This text explains the develoment of aviation, the mechanics of lift and flight, and the noises that an aircraft makes at various stages of the flight, in order to defuse the panic many sufferers experience. Two thirds of the book is dedicated to relaxation exercises, and cognitive behaviural techniques for changing the way sufferers think about flying, and substituting positive for negative beliefs. Included are tables to use and re-use to measure progress.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Book from the world's first Expert in Fear of Flying, August 2, 2009

This review is from: Take the Fear Out of Flying (Paperback)
I have an autographed copy of this book - so I'm slightly biased :-)

The late Maurice Yaffe was the first psychologist in the world to actively research the Fear of Flying.
He built his own flight simulator in 1979 in Guys Hospital London and later set up Fear of Flying courses with Captains Douglas Ord and Peter Hughes from British Airways.

With this vast and unique (at that time) experience, the book is an excellent read and takes the reader in 9 thought-provoking Chapters through their own fears onto the 'Promised Land' of "Taking the Plunge - Your Next Flight".

For me, the chapters on "Principles of Flight" and "Dealing with the Worry Factor" were the most interesting
eg. Jumping to conclusions: "The seat belt sign has just come on, so something dangerous is going to happen".
!!

Enjoy the book, it's a classic and I've not seen anything to beat it.
