Chick Lit with a Conscious,
This review is from: Take Her Man (Paperback)
Have you ever put in time making a `good' man great? You know what I'm talking about...the educated man with a decent paying job from the "right" family but needs tips in the love department? Well, Troy did. She found the perfect `husband' in Julian. Then one afternoon during a loving late lunch she heard the three words that signal the end - "I need a break".
To put it lightly, Troy was devastated. She spent over a year of her life molding, shaping, and doing all she could to hook her a "good" husband. What's a sista to do? Call her girls (Tasha and Tamia) to get the official 3T Break Up party in motion. At the party, the 3T's step out in their sexiest gear, get drunk, cut up a photo of the ex-man while discussing the implementation of the six-step get over the man plan. This sophisticated pact has a proven track record and Troy realizes what she has to do to get her man back. The crazy drama that develops will make you laugh and the changes in the characters will make your head spin. Will Troy realize where her heart is before its too late? TAKE HER MAN is a fast paced witty look into black love. The elaborate six-step plan, It Girl party, drink creations along with the Do's and Don't detailed at the end of the chapter are hilarious. Octavia has an entertaining way of discussing the most emotional parts of breaking up. Even though this is an entertaining work, Octavia brings out several issues such as: community service, social class, motherhood, mental health, interracial dating, sisterhood, religion and art. TAKE HER MAN is chick-lit with a conscious. Gotta run so I can plan my first "It Girl" PAR-TAY. Reviewed By - Deltareviewer For Real Page Turners

Okay...When I saw this book sitting on the barren Wal-Mart shelves for African American books, I thought [...] whether I really wanted to purchase it. I had never heard of the author and I am a devoted fan of those that I know. I didn't know if this was going to be a good buy or just something to read while the summer passes by and I find something else to get into (I am a teacher and have summers off). Anyway, because I was that bored, I picked it up.
What a wise decision!! I could not put it down. The book had me going through the motions. I found myself trying to tell Troy what she should've done in certain situations, laughing out loud, falling in love with one of the characters (the preacher), and just not being able to put it down. I read it in less than a day, which ruined my plans of spreading it out over time. Now I have to go get another book. LOL! This book was excellent and I highly recommend it to others. I hope there is more to come from this wonderful, new, inspiring author. (Good job!)

Couldn't get into it!!!!,
This review is from: Take Her Man (Paperback)
Apparently according to the "rave" reviews from others about this book my review will be the stand alone....because Sorry everybody I did not like this book at all. I found the whole "TAKE HER MAN" Plan stupid and frankly quite childish and manipulative. I found the fact that Troy who described herself as a "Fine, Black, Intelligent Woman" played herself in such a desperate way. The fact that Julian dumped her in the first place should have gave her a clue that he wasn't the one...and it took her playing herself the total FOOL at the end for her to finally get it. Honestly I found the characters irritating (except for Kyle) and I had lost intrest early on once they cooked up this ludacris scheme of taking Julian back from the woman he dumped Troy for. I mean are you serious? Troy acted like a spoiled child who was having a tantrum when she couldn't play with her favorite toy (Whine, Whine, Whine). I mean ok yeah its messed up when you think all is good in your relationship then find out its not...but instead of MANIPULATING and PLOTTING someone back in your life...(yeah, that's what Troy was doing with the aid of her friends)let time do time and if its meant to be then he/she will come back to you because they want to....not because you "planned it"... This book in my opinion just was plain foolish. And the little "tips" given throughout the book didn't help. Instead of calling this book "TAKE HER MAN" it should've been titled, "How to Play Yourself...By Trying To Play Some Else"

More like a 4.5 rating,
This review is from: Take Her Man (Paperback)
I was very skeptical about reading this book. I am not really into a whole lot of girl drama pertaining to the ex boyfriend/girlfriend. I must say I was surprised that I liked the book. It wasn't really what I expected. The take her man plan was crazy, but it was also funny. There were some good points that were made by Mary Elizabeth (a man knowing your worth.) The 3T's were hilarious. I loved Kyle. You know sometimes when something bad happens to us we think it is the worst thing in the world. But is actually exactly what we needed.

Worht Waiting For,
This review is from: Take Her Man (Paperback)
This book was very well written by Grace Octavia. I found myself from the first page being able to relate to every character and every situation. With Troy, I found myself being completely engulfed in her character. From going to school, to the relationship with her mother, father, friends(3T) and grandparents to everything in her environment making her the person that she was. I was shocked by the fact that there was so much detail written about every character that I felt like I knew them all personally. Even though the plot of the book was based on Troy and Jullian's relationship, the book focused in detail on the surrounding characters and their issues that was included. Everytime I put the book down, I found myself picking the book back up. Very relatable because it was written to this date and age and very well written.I look forward to reading more from this aurthur.

The genre itself has become a little crowded, racier and more than a tad bit saturated with different takes on the same story. Then there is Miss Octavia.... She carves out her own place to make this novel a compelling read and a flat out interesting story which pulls you in the way that only a great writer can do. Get it...you will walk away with not only a new appreciation for the genre but an excellent feeling for how a good story, should be told. And immersion is indeed the hallmark of a great book....

The "It Girl" Diaries,
This review is from: Take Her Man (Paperback)
Troy is a successful law student who had everything, including her doctor boyfriend Julian. Troy hears wedding bells in her future until Julian says that he needs a break. Heartbroken and devastated, Troy calls her best friends Tamia and Tasha for the break-up party. "The 3T's" are back in full effect dancing and drinking the night away on behalf of Troy's break-up. Troy is feeling no pain until she sees Julian with a new girl on his arm. Now the break-up party plan shifts to the "Take Her Man" plan. Troy will do everything in her power to get her man back but is Julian really worth all of this plotting and scheming? Things get even more complicated when Troy's father introduces her to his business partner Kyle. Will Kyle be a temporary distraction or could he be something more than what Troy bargained for?
Take Her Man is a widely entertaining debut novel by Grace Octavia. Octavia created an engaging storyline with fun characters. One of the many good things about this book is the camaraderie between "The 3Ts" (Troy, Tasha, and Tamia). Troy is the main character but Tasha and Tamia's stories are just as interesting. You'll share in the laughter, tears, and drama of these women just like you would with your own best friends. Readers will be pleased to find real-life rules, regulations, and even drink recipes to help you become the "It Girl" that you choose to be. Take Her Man a light and enjoyable read. This is the perfect book to grab for those long, relaxing days of summer. Reviewed by Radiah Hubbert for Urban Reviews

Great Book - Exciting and Funny Read,
This review is from: Take Her Man (Paperback)
I am reading this book right now. I am truly enjoying it. It has a lot of laugh out loud moments in it. The author has captured how men and women think to a tee. I love how you explain women's worth and how as women we really need to raise our expectations. This book was very encouraging and funny. I would recommend this book as a great read.....and don't be ashamed if you find yourself laughing out loud to yourself. It will happen. I have giggled or laughed so many times reading this book. I absolutely, positively love the preacher character who comes into play in this book!
