Editorial Reviews

Review

It's rare as a book reviewer that you find something to rave about - but then that's what makes a special catch so special. Such a book is Take A Hike. You know you've found a good hiking guide when the corners of the pages are well-thumbed and there are bookmarks and souvenirs (like pressed leaves) in between pages after only a few months. --Jillian St. Jacques, The Greece Post

Imagine hiking through the Lost City of Tryon, navigating Plaster Woods, and exploring Hardwood Swamp. Such names conjure images of exotic getaways. But actually, these are local hiking trails featured in Take A Hike. --Ellen Rosen, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

The greater Rochester area has plenty of trails for you and the kids to enjoy and explore the great outdoors. And locating those trails has never been easier thanks to Take A Hike. --Beth Pessin, Genesee Valley Parent

About the Author

The authors, Rich and Sue Freeman decided to make their living from what they love hiking and bicycling. In 1996 they left corporate jobs to spend six months hiking 2,200 miles on the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. That adventure deepened their love of the outdoors and inspired them to share this love by introducing others to the joys of hiking. Since most people don t have the option (let alone the desire) to undertake a six-month trek, they decided to focus on short hikes, near home. The result was the first edition (1997) of Take A Hike! Family Walks in the Rochester Area. They went on to explore hiking, bicycling and paddling trails throughout the Central and Western New York State region.

Rich and Sue continue to be active with various trail groups, and they enjoy doing trail work. In addition, their passion for long distance hiking continues. They have thru-hiked the 500-mile long Bruce Trail in Ontario, Canada, hiked across Spain on the Camino de Santiago Trail, hiked across England on the Coast to Coast Trail, and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. They have bicycled across New York State, following the Erie Canalway Trail and biked the C&O Canal Trail. Each year, in addition to doing guidebook research, they try to take at least one long adventure trip.

Since beginning their new career writing and publishing books, the Freemans have pared down their living expenses and are enjoying a simpler lifestyle. They now have control of their own destiny and the freedom to head into the woods for a refreshing respite when the urge strikes. Still, their life is infinitely more cluttered than when they carried all their worldly needs on their backs for six months on the Appalachian Trail.

More About the Author

Rich and Sue Freeman, decided to make their living from what they love--being outdoors. In 1996 they left corporate jobs at Eastman Kodak Company to spend six months hiking 2,200 miles on the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. That adventure deepened their love of the outdoors and inspired them to share this love by introducing others to the joys of hiking.

Since most people don't have the option (let alone the desire) to undertake a six-month trek, they decided to focus on short hikes near home. The result was the first edition of "Take A Hike! Family Walks in the Rochester Area" (which is now in it's 3rd edition. They went on to explore hiking, bicycling, skiing, and snowshoeing trails, waterfalls and waterways for paddling throughout central and western New York State. They branched into historical adventure by writing "Cobblestone Quest." The Freemans have written 14 guidebooks.

Rich and Sue have a continuing passion for adventure. They have hiked the 500-mile-long Bruce Trail in Ontario, Canada (and written about it), hiked on the Florida Trail, hiked across northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago Trail, hiked across England, and hiked a 500-mile section of the International Appalachian Trail in Quebec, Canada. They have trekked to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. They hiked the tropical forests and volcanic peaks of wild Hawaii and across the isthmus of Panama.

On bicycles they have crossed New York State on the Erie Canalway Trail and pedaled the C&O Canal Trail from Washington D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland.
The Freemans publish a free blog on outdoor recreation in New York State. For a free subscription, go to www.footprintpress.com and click on blog.

Since beginning their new careers writing and publishing guidebooks, the Freemans have pared down their living expenses and are enjoying a simpler lifestyle. They now have control of their own destiny and the freedom to head into the woods and waterways for a refreshing respite when the urge strikes. Still, their life is infinitely more cluttered than when they carried all their worldly needs on their backs for six months on the Appalachian Trail.

In 2005 the Freemans moved to Florida and are now exploring a whole new territory. In addition, they started an internet business at www.DisplayStands4you.com where they make and sell book stands for use in schools, libraries, museums, and by authors and publishers, and anyone else who needs to display or hold a book open.
