5.0 out of 5 stars Best collection of Al Green songs, ever!
This is the best Al Green anthology produced to date! Finally, there's "Strong As Death (Sweet As Love)" available. This particular track (originally recored in 1974, on the back of one of Al's hit tunes), really gives you Al at his best. So, for all of you true AL Green fans, check it out as you listen to this 2- CD set which is worth whatever price you pay for...

1.0 out of 5 stars don't buy this cd
I LOVE Al Green, but this cd does NOT do him justice, and also it is a badly recorded cd, sounds vary from cut to cut, I returned it and said "They should really take that out of production. Al Green is really good and this cd is terrible."

I should know because I have everything Al has come out with, both R&B and gospel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation, June 10, 2010
This review is from: Take Me to the River (Audio CD)
This 2-CD set combines the best of Green's Hi years, peaking in the mid-70s, with live tracks, songs from later decades, and a few gospel sides. Used copies from Amazon Marketplace sellers are a very good value. Here's a full track listing:

I'm Glad You're Mine

What Am I Gonna Do With Myself?

Tired of Being Alone

I'm Still in Love With You

Let's Stay Together

I Tried to Tell Myself

Love and Happiness

You Ought to Be With Me

Look What You Done for Me

Here I Am (Come and Take Me)

Call Me (Come Back Home)

Livin' for You

L-O-V-E (Love)

How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?

Take Me to the River

Right Now, Right Now

So Good to Be Here [Live]

For the Good Times

I Can't Get Next to You

Let's Get Married

Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy) [Live]

God Blessed Our Love [Live]

Let It Shine

Lean on Me

Hangin' On

Strong as Death (Sweet as Love)

Nothing Takes the Place of You

The Spirit Might Come-On and On

There's No Way

Belle

5.0 out of 5 stars ...there's a goings-on goin' on..., August 16, 2001
This review is from: Take Me to the River (Audio CD)
...there are some shortcomings in the sound quality on a couple of songs and if you are a serious Al Green fan then you probably already own most of the material on this release, especially on disc 1, but come on now...THIS IS THE BEST COLLECTION OF HIS MATERIAL TO DATE!...you have the meat of most of his classics and the gravy of some of his lesser-knowns. HERE I AM (COME AND TAKE ME) is an ultimate slow-burner for me, PLUS: HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART? RIGHT NOW, RIGHT NOW? this album is butter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic., January 27, 2008
This review is from: Take Me to the River (Audio CD)
Al Green is like sex -- the worst I ever had was wonderful.

How someone gives this album 1 star is beyond me. The sound quality isn't perfect, but totally adequate -- particularly, given the likely condition of the original master tapes and the facilities in which most of these recordings were made (Google Royal Recording Studio in Memphis, and you'll get the idea). I don't think you are likely to find any better quality recordings of Al Green's music.

Most Green fans will have heard most of this material. It is a fantastic retrospective on the music of an absolute industry giant.

It you don't have this album, you should.

Good quality product. Tons of tunes. Top notch vocals are Al Green's trademark. Plenty of soul. The only drawback is that the producer recorded lame horn arrangements.

5.0 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!, February 22, 2001
This review is from: Take Me to the River (Audio CD)
I haven't bought a CD as worthwhile as this SENSATIONAL Al Green album in a long time. In fact I can't remember the last cd i played as much as this day in and day out! I had never listened to Al Green before and heard some good songs on one of my father's al green albums so I bought this one for myself. I have listened to it to and from work, in my apartment, at work, in my car, in the shower! This cd is simply one of the greatest albums I have ever listened to. For $20 this cd is the most well spent money I have ever spent on an album. This album is worth it even if it cost $100!. Another reviewer gave it a terrible rating and that person doesn't know what they are talking about. Take my word for it: you will not be disappointed. The songs: Love and Happiness, Here I am Baby, Look What you Done for Me, Call Me, God Blessed our Love, Lean on Me, and You ought to be with me are all the greatest! I wake up each day and go to work and this gives me incentive to get out of bed so I can put on this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best from the King of Memphis Soul, June 8, 2001
This review is from: Take Me to the River (Audio CD)
The Reverend Al Green's talents are on full display in 2-disc collection that is a must for any fan of R&B. Talk about a great walk down memory lane--Al can take me to the river anytime. I recently toured the Smithsonian "Rock & Soul" exhibit in Memphis and it reinforced what a significant position Al holds in modern music.
