Editorial Reviews

Review

“A wonderful, humorous read for anyone in a marriage or thinking of being in one. My wife, Estelle, and I had the good fortune of being married for sixty-five years. When anyone asked her about making a marriage last, she always replied, ‘Marry someone who can stand being with you.’”—Carl Reiner

“This book makes you realize how valuable laughter is in a marriage. Buy it for your spouse and add years to your relationship.”—Ben Stiller

“In her quest to get more humor into her family life, Modisett has written a book with great passion and huge heart. A delight for anyone who is, was, or might ever be married.”—Ayelet Waldman, author of Love and Treasure

“My wife and I are either killing or bombing in our marriage, and Dani Modisett’s book explains how that’s actually a good thing. Finally, some validation that a marriage between two insane people can be a beautiful thing.”—Jim Gaffigan, comedian

“Filled with humor, aspirational stories, and practical tips, Take My Spouse, Please helped me reflect on my most cherished relationship: my marriage. It made me feel hopeful about what it takes to stay connected, to grow, and most important, to keep laughing together—always.”—Mallika Chopra, author of Living with Intent

“A welcome relief from typical how-to marriage manuals. Highly recommended for everyone who wants more joy and more love in their relationship.”—Ken Page, author of Deeper Dating

“Other than having sex, I can’t think of anything better for two people who love each to do than to laugh together. Modisett knows this and delivers a book with inspiring stories of happy marriages and highly doable advice to help couples of all kinds.”—Jill Soloway, writer and comedian

“For many Irish Catholics, the idea of leaving a marriage after vowing to stay is an idea that if acted upon will lead to eternal damnation. In Dani Modisett’s funny, insightful book, she provides wonderful examples of many marriages that last because of shared happiness and understanding rather than fear of a forever spent in hell.”—Mike O’Malley, producer, writer, and actor

“Having been married for twenty-seven years and writing about relationships for thirty-five years, I can see that Dani Modisett has captured the straight truth in this book. If you aren’t laughing through the years, you aren’t sticking together through the years. Sustaining a marriage is tough stuff, and this book, crammed with stories of resilience and humor, is proof that it is possible.”—Iris Krasnow, best-selling author of The Secret Lives of Wives

“My life’s work is all about comedy, love, and laughter. Dani manages to look at the most important love relationship we have—our marriage—and see it through the lens of a comedian, coming up with meaningful ideas that can’t help but provide results. What a book!”—Yakov Smirnoff, stand-up comedian and actor

“I got married six months to the day after I met my now-husband. Best and most irrational thing I have ever done. People laughed at me. Now I know why my marriage works so well—it’s because we were two physicians inadvertently following the rules of comedy. Dani nails it, prescribing strategies to keep relationships healthy, honest, and fun. Doctor’s orders: read this book!”—Dr. Cara Natterson, New York Times best-selling author of the American Girl advice book The Care and Keeping of You

Fantasitc! I can't say enough good things about this book. It is well written, witty and well rounded with sound input from an assortment of long term relationships and marriages. I have read many, many books on relationships over the years and this, in my opinion, is the best yet. Dani has a candid and insightful way of introducing each couple and what they have to offer for advice-who better than long timers!? SHe also plugs in some of her own experiences and some funny stories too. But the running theme of laughter is just plain good for every human being. The book also touches on serious topics, so it isn't just a load of laughs, this is truly solid, sound material. I recommend this book to any couple. Genius idea to apply the rules of comedy to marriage. Excellent read!

Incredibly witty and true. Comforting and hilarious. You don't know whether to laugh or cry out loud when reading Dani Klein Modisette's lovely tales of longterm marriage. Highly recommend this book. In fact, I highly recommend reading this book in bed with your spouse! Can't wait for her next book.

I was assigned this book for a class. Usually I ignore the book assignments, but my friend told me to read this one and I have to say it was really good. I'm not married, or in an extended relationship, or even in a relationship at all, but the way that Dani Modisett put this book together made it well worth the read. Take my Spouse Please was full of humor and insight, the thing that many people in relationships need whether they've been in the relationship for fifty days of fifty years. This isn't a romance novel, it isn't anything sappy or contrived. It is pleasantly realistic, the way that couples actually view each other. You could spend big bucks on a marriage councilor, buy stacks of self help books with stupid titles or purchase some sort of erotic film to try to spice up your love life, but really all you need to do is settle down with your significant other and laugh along with this book. Like I said, I'm not married but this book gave me a lot of insight and it was very enjoyable to read. Guys, girls, young old, it doesn't matter. Laughter is the lifeblood of any relationship and Modisett makes that impossibly clear.

I was assigned to read book for a class I am taking in college. As a college student, marriage is not typically on the forefront of my mind, but it is a normal milestone in a persons life, so I could see how this topic could relate to a younger viewer. However, once I read the first chapter, I was completely captivated by Dani Klein Modisett's comedic approach to the understanding of relationships. As well, the advice and insight in the book seems vetted since Modisett has each one of them accompanied by the stories of real couples. As relationships are an ever-growing part of life, this book was completely relatable even though I am not a married person. I would suggest reading this book to people who want a better understanding of how relationships work, no matter their age or relationship status.

The great thing about reading this book was that I really found it could be relatable to various age groups. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about reading it at first. I was expecting a traditional guidebook on how to keep your spouse interested which I usually stray away from. Instead I was entertained the whole time, finding humor in the realness of the nuances of every different kind of relationship that can exist. As a female in my early 20’s I find the concept of commitment to be sort of bleak and impossible but this has redefined my notion of long lasting relationships. I found a new found respect for the art of comedic writing as well. Keeping humor and laughter in all of life’s situations, not only when it comes to marriage was a truly encouraging and inspiring way to look at life’s challenges. I definitely recommend this book to anyone, it is across the board a great read and will certainly have you entertained and begging for more from Dani Klein Modisett! I’m looking foreword to reading more by her in the future.

I was assigned to read this novel for a course I’m taking in college. I was initially unsure of how invested I would be in a story about marriage as that is not a typical subject matter that is on my mind as a college student. As soon as I delved into the book I immediately understood that this story was accessible and understandable to all ages. Dani Klein’s comedic approach is very witty and captivating. Straying from your traditional self-help book full of guidelines, Klein applies the cardinal rules of comedy to keeping a marriage afloat, taking in a variety of insights from a slew of different couples in long term relations. This story is chalk full of self-exposure, vulnerability and candid moments depicting the struggles of marriage, all strung together with delightful humor. Great read!
