This review is from: Take Off (Audio CD)
Barbara takes off and dives into some funky grooves on this set. Features Ray Anderson (Trombone), Roy Hargrove (Trumpet, Flugelhorn), Lonnie Plaxico (Guitar (Acoustic), Bass (Electric & Acoustic)), Mitch Watkins (Guitar (Acoustic & Electric), Don Alias (Percussion), Dennis Chambers (Drums), Joe Locke (Guitar (Acoustic), Vibraphone, MIDI Vibraphone), Mike Sim (Sax (Alto, Baritone, Soprano, Tenor), and of course, Barbara Dennerlein (Organ, Synthesizer, Piano, Arranger, Organ (Hammond), Producer, Footpedal Bass). Top shelf contemporary organ-based jazz.

An Excellent Effort!,
This review is from: Take Off (Audio CD)
German organist Barbara Dennerlein gained a lot of attention when she signed with Verve in the mid-'90s. This set shows that her sound is very different from the usual dominant influence on her instrument, Jimmy Smith. Much of the music is quite funky, with Dennerlein demonstrating that she can riff as passionately as anyone and come up with continually fresh ideas over fairly simple structures. There is more variety than expected on the program, including a straightforward version of the bebop standard "Hot House" and some moody ballads. Dennerlein is joined by a particularly strong supporting cast that includes trumpeter Roy Hargrove, trombonist Ray Anderson, Mike Sim on saxes, and guitarist Mitch Watkins. This is an excellent effort that is easily recommended to jazz/funk collectors.

Barbara Dennerlein has the chops of the older masters of jazz B3, with more technical fluidity and just a hint of European flavoring. I liked the songwriting and production. This CD is a pleasure throughout, highly recommended to novices to jazz organ as well as the old pros - you'll enjoy it.
