Review

Take a Shot! is a fast and furious ride. It’s Moneyball meets The Hangover! I love it almost as much as my Oscar and Lombardi Trophies.”
Steve Tisch, Chairman, New York Giants & Academy Award–winning producer, Forrest Gump

“Insightful, funny, and full of great anecdotes, Take a Shot! is a roller-coaster ride of a story. Jake reminds me of Indiana Jones, never giving up until he reaches his goal.”
Frank Marshall, filmmaker

“Just like my start-up experience at ESPN and the NFL, Take a Shot! captures the humor and drive it takes to success against all odds.”

Steve Bornstein, EVP of Media, NFL & President/CEO of the NFL Network

“The book is fast-paced and exciting. Jake’s tenacity is an inspiration to any entrepreneur, whatever the field. And to think that this is only the beginning for Major League Lacrosse is amazing. Could it be the next NFL? With Jake and Dave at the helm, nothing would surprise me.”
Doug Ellin, creator and executive producer of HBO’s Entourage

David K. Morrow is an entrepreneur, businessman, and cofounder of Major League Lacrosse (MLL). The former star of the Princeton Tigers men’s lacrosse team from 1990 to 1993, he was a three-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-American, twice making the first team.

In an illustrious college career, David still holds the distinction of being the last defenseman to earn the NCAA lacrosse player of the year award, was a two-time NCAA defenseman of the year, and made the all–Ivy League first team three times. During his collegiate career, Princeton won the school’s first NCAA tournament championship, won two Ivy League championships, and earned the school’s first four NCAA tournament invitations. Following college, he represented Team USA in the 1994 and 1998 World Lacrosse Championships and was named to the 1998 All-World Team.

His equipment company, Warrior Sports, is a leading equipment provider to professional, collegiate, and interscholastic teams and players. It provides a variety of equipment and has propagated the interest in titanium material for use in lacrosse and ice-hockey equipment. By cofounding the MLL, he has expanded professional lacrosse from box lacrosse to field lacrosse.

Americans are drawn to speed - one only has to look at NASCAR to see that. Yet we also like games that can be a little rough - Hockey and football, anyone? Mental agility is also important, because watching players adjust constantly to changing conditions on the field is fascinating...soccer demonstrates that best. And yet, there is one sport that combines all of these things into one amazing game - and while it is the fastest growing sport in America, it also happens to be the oldest sport in America. Lacrosse is that game.

I was drawn to read this book because my son plays. He is now in 6th grade and has been playing since 1st grade. My husband, who grew up on the East Coast, played when he was in high school and wanted our son to be able to play as well. I informed him that Oregon (where I grew up and where we planned to settle) didn't even *know* what lacrosse was. How wrong I was - leagues are springing up all over the place, for both girls and boys. High schools are getting better and better. And for a while, Portland even had it's own MLL team.

Take A Shot! is the story of how the MLL (Major League Lacrosse) got its start. From one college player who reinvented lacrosse sticks, to the Body by Jake guy who was an unstoppable force of nature, to the son of a televangelist, Take A Shot! defines the hopes and dreams of all sports enthusiasts who invest themselves in their players, their teams, and their leagues. The book starts off a little slow and seemed more about Jake Steinfeld than about lacrosse. However, it picked up speed fairly quickly and ended up a very interesting look at the stress, the craziness and the cost of starting a major league sports organization.

This book is really a terrific read. It's not about fitness even though it's written by the king of "butt-issimo" Body by Jake himself. On the surface, it's about the creation of Major League Lacrosse, but it's much more. I learned a lot about business and there are just some fun and funny moments and stories including incidents with many of Jake's celebrity friends. The book is really about the great friendship that Jake and Dave have and how that got them through the ups and downs that go along with starting any business and the trust that's essential between friends in everyday life. I really loved the book. I hope everyone reads it.

Take A Shot!: A Remarkable Story of Perseverance, Friendship, and a Really Crazy Adventure is a very readable story about the founding of professional lacrosse.

It is written in a very conversational way, and I think it would be a good read for anybody interested in the sport or entrepreneurship in general. But the writing level and tone makes the ideal target for this book a young person who is already a lacrosse enthusiast. This book is heavy on motivation but very light on the kinds of gritty details that most older business-minded readers will be interested in.

To be honest, I did not know there was even such a league before I read this book. I am not a huge fan of the sport per se. I have watched some games, though I have never actually played myself. But as a fan of sports in general, the story-line seemed interesting to me.

Actually, I was even more intrigued because it's so new. Will it last? Judging by these two guys and the people they have behind them, I would bet on "yes."

But the key questions behind, "how did they do it," were never fully answered for me. The best I can conclude is that knowing how to leverage your connections and being blindly optimistic can produce great results. For those without connections or blind optimism, I am not sure such an endeavor would have ended in the same way.

However, that doesn't change the fact that this book is packed with useful information for the budding entrepreneur. Jake Steinfeld's dogged persistence and positive attitude do hold a lot of lessons for anybody who has ever faced obstacles and given up as a result.

I'm not sure what I was expecting with this book - I'm neither a lacrosse fan, nor was I very aware of Body by Jake's founder. I expected to find a couple of good lessons buried deep within the dry/vacuous material that is so typical of standard management/motivational books.

Instead, what I found was that Jake Steinfeld is a natural storyteller, who gave me a ringside seat into the birth, growing pains, and the undying passion that inspired the founders of a brand new major sports league, all told in an engaging first person perspective.

It is easy to look back at a successful project and to forget or gloss over all the challenges that had to be overcome on your way to success. In this book, Jake instead focuses on the challenges and shows how you can never take anything for granted, and that if anything can go wrong, it definitely will.

As a result, this book is chock full of management and leadership lessons, all provided in such a light and entertaining manner that I didn't even realize that I was being taught anything at all.

The key takeaway from this book occurs right at the very end, where Dave Morrow shares that confidence and passion trump knowledge and experience. If this sounds counter-intuitive, then this book is a must read!

Happy Reading!
