5.0 out of 5 stars TAKE THIS!, April 17, 2002

This review is from: Take That You Bastards (Audio CD)
The Coolies....the late, great, Atlanta band. Grab this chance to hear both of their brilliantly twisted, yet hard rocking albums. "...dig?" is hilarious.....thrash punk covers of Simon and Garfunkel, plus the guilty pleasure classic, "Having My Baby". If you like your rock with a dash of irony, this is the band for you.

"Doug" is the story of of a guy who becomes a famous chef, only to blow his money on drugs. "Crack Pipe" is pure genius, a rock song with a great hook and funny lyrics that ultimately send the "Just Say No" message.

Get this double CD set while you can, it is GENIUS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock Opera for the Twisted, March 28, 2000
This review is from: Take That You Bastards (Audio CD)
I can't speak for the 2nd half of the cd set, but the first cd is a rock opera titled "Doug" which I first listened to in 1990. It is the story of a skinhead named Doug who mugs a transvestite (song title PussyCook) fry cook, steals his secret recipe book, and sells it(song title Cookbook) to become a millionaire(song title Shirts & Skins). Once Doug becomes rich, he becomes paranoid thinking that people will learn that his success is based on a lie and he turns to drugs(song title Crack Pipe). At the end, his is penniless(song title Poverty). You can follow Doug's progression from rags to riches and back to rags through the songs on the cd set. Overall, it is a brilliant, if somewhat twisted, body of work. I highly reccomend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Coolies, August 14, 2010

I love these guys! "Dig" was a great album of Simon and Garfunkel covers. I played the album till the grooves were worn out! "Doug",their "rock opera" had some fantastic tunes on it. Very reminiscent of The Who's "Tommy" musically. The rise and fall of "a skinhead who became a culinary giant". Priceless stuff!
