5.0 out of 5 stars Best Served Cold
This conpendium of quotations from the radical right wing of U.S. politics and media makes good, if chilling, reading. it's only unnerving if you remember that these people very likely mean exactly the things that they've said. 3.0 out of 5 stars It's Original Format Probably Worked Better
This book's preface reveals that it got its start as a $3.00 pamphlet covering the same topic, and its sucess led to its expansion into a larger book.

While I admit to having never read the original pamphlet, I suspect it probably worked better in shorter format. While there are a number of outrageous, stupid, or just plain scary quotes from right-wingers, especially...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Served Cold, March 14, 2004
This review is from: Take Them at Their Words: Startling, Amusing and Baffling Quotations from the GOP and Their Friends, 1994-2004 (Paperback)
This conpendium of quotations from the radical right wing of U.S. politics and media makes good, if chilling, reading. it's only unnerving if you remember that these people very likely mean exactly the things that they've said. It leads one to wonder why people are so surprised when they finally see the far right's agenda in action, because it's clearly laid out in the words they say on a regular basis. This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of just about any American who believes in equality for all, as both a reminder and as ammunition: these words should be served up to right wingers at every available opportunity.

5.0 out of 5 stars i've only read excerpts so far..., March 11, 2004

...but if this book is anything like the excerpts, then it should be required reading for every american! for some reason the corporate owned media has been giving the corrupt GOP a pass for years. this book looks to expose their hypocrisy and humiliate the fascists we know as republicans. hopefully, the brainwashed republican voters will read this book so they can become familiar with the corruption they have been supporting for so long. this book, and books like it, have been long overdue. it's finally time to expose the liars and hypocrites like the bush administration and their sorry apologists and propogandists like rush limbaugh and ann coulter. there's a sleeping democratic majority and this book will start to wake it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars as bad as you thought, July 7, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Take Them at Their Words: Startling, Amusing and Baffling Quotations from the GOP and Their Friends, 1994-2004 (Paperback)
Here in one handy book are many of the outrageous things you thought you'd heard conservative extremists say, arranged in chapters by topic (education, judiciary, the Clintons, etc.) and indexed by name at the back of the book. There are over 350 pages of quotes here (in standard typeface) and I bet it would be easy to put together another volume. Quotes range from a sentence to a page, and give the context of the utterance. As one might expect, George W., Ann Coulter, Tom Delay, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Newt and Rummy figure largely, and the quotes are as outrageous as one fears. They are hateful, hate-filled and despicable, and go a long way in explaining the coarsening of American political discourse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, thoroughly researched, April 30, 2004

Speaking of Rush and dogs--it's interesting to see that his attack dogs have come out in full force against this book.

As someone who recalls hearing the quote in question, I can understand why the extreme right would be so fearful of this book, since it clearly demonstrates the power of the printed word. To see an entire book of similarly misguided and hateful quotes is not only amusing in a perverse sort of way, but it also stands as a record of all of the divisive and ignorant comments made on a daily basis by many of the men and women who are set with the challenge of leading our nation.

Bruce Miller's book is a must-read for anyone interested in American politics. Not only is it entertaining, it also provides a bigger picture of why our nation is so polarized--with so many people spewing words of hatred and fear, this book serves as a reminder that we still have a long way to go if we're to reach any sort of middle ground.

I highly recommend this book. You may feel like you've heard it all before, but seeing all of it collected in one place--in print--makes it all the more dramatic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic amusing, yet disturbing, May 3, 2004

The republicans and their whacko and dishonest thugs in the media are well documented here. The republicans hate it because it's a record of their horrific behavior, their lies, their manipulation. People who really love this country, and the truth, will appreciate this document of republican distortion. It is time for all of us to demand truth, and this well documented book shows us how unfair the republican right really is. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shocking, May 11, 2004

I knew these guys were dirty, but until now I had no proof of it. Some of these quotes are mind blowing in their ignorance and arrogance. For example, the GOP Erie County (NY) Executive Joel Giambra's comment last year on why he switched his kids to private school: "Our children began to be fearful of black kids, so we decided that something had to change, and we were fortunate enough to be able to make the choice."

5.0 out of 5 stars The liars can dish it out, but they can't take it!, April 26, 2004

This review is from: Take Them at Their Words: Startling, Amusing and Baffling Quotations from the GOP and Their Friends, 1994-2004 (Paperback)
This compendium blew my mind. If your mind is in working order, Miller's book is sure to have the same effect on you. An amazing record of the GOP's illogic, bigotry, nastiness and just plain downright craziness. What's happened to the party of Eisenhower? They need help. So do we all. This book helps, by laying out "their words" in black and white, for all to see.

I laughed when I read the first posting here, which accuses Miller of making up that quote of Limbaugh's about Clinton's nanny. I don't know where Miller got it, but I know I heard Rush say it. The comment quoted by the poster here is not the one in Miller's book. I heard it with my own ears.

These people don't want anyone to know the truth about them.

For years we've been told that the haters are all on the left. This book sets the record straight. It just drives them crazy , doesn't it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Setting the Record Straight, April 26, 2004

To answer the review that questions the truthfulness of Miller's quotation compendium, I can attest that Rush Limbaugh did repeat his ugly joke about cats and "dogs" because I heard it myself in the mid-90s. He may have apologized profusely once (I guess this means that he certainly DID make this kind of crack!), but he repeated it nonetheless. Why it was not noted in the press probably has more to do with the fact that it was old news and no one wanted to repeat this viciousness and give the guy more free publicity. Nonetheless, it happened, it is true and thanks to Miller for collecting all of this dishonesty and exposing it to the light of day.

I couldn't put the book down. It is humorous and thought provoking. I highly recommend this book! By the way, I also heard Rush's quote about cats and dogs, which a reviewer below puts into question.
