5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to a collection
Only one review I've read so far compares Edmonson to Blossom Dearie. I first heard her today at the Austin "Armadillo Christmas Bazaar", her voice echoing through the hall singing "If I Were A Bell" from "Guys and Dolls", and I thought "wow they're playing Blossom Dearie." As I listened, however, I could hear the nuances, the very faint suggestion of a growl, the slurs,...

Only one review I've read so far compares Edmonson to Blossom Dearie. I first heard her today at the Austin "Armadillo Christmas Bazaar", her voice echoing through the hall singing "If I Were A Bell" from "Guys and Dolls", and I thought "wow they're playing Blossom Dearie." As I listened, however, I could hear the nuances, the very faint suggestion of a growl, the slurs, the flattened vowels, and I realized I must be wrong. I got to the stage eventually and was totally amazed.

This young woman has absorbed a *lot* of tradition and synthesized it into something that's new and deeply evocative at the same time. The combo behind her is totally awesome, and the engineering on this album is flawless - it sounds fantastic, clean, crisp, and rich.

I've got a 12-year-old son who's a serious Blossom Dearie fan (not kidding) and I can't wait to play these tracks for him. The comparison is not meant to label Kat as a knock-off by any means - it's like an introduction. I'm on my third listen to this disk and I still hear the similarities but now mostly I hear Kat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow- another great jazz vocalist, April 5, 2010

First time I heard Kat was today singing Day and Night, I thought for sure it was another Stacy Kent tune, but one I had not heard recently. I was surprised when I found out it was Kat and jumped right into Amazon to chek on the availability of her latest CD "take to the sky". I don't know squat about Blossom Dearie, so can't really compare her as others have.

I like her sound and the arrangements are great. Hope she does well and also happy to hear she comes from that wonderful music heartland of Austin, Texas. Great town and just keeps cranking out super artists for all of us to enjoy.

Kat's singing is easy to listen to, and her voice has an inner quality that adds emotion and depth to her songs. She is well on her way to reaching the top ranks.

Kat Edmonson's Take to The Sky is by far the best jazz album of the year. The clarity of her voice and the precision of her lyrics far exceed any expectation I could have imagined. Thank you for making my day!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect, April 22, 2011

I love music...love it! But much of the music I listen to throughout the day is simply playing in the background while I am working on something else. I find myself physically unable to do that with "Take to the Sky" by Kat Edmonson. Her music immediately grabs and demands my attention, forcing it to become my focus, and the work to become the background noise. This record is perfect in every way for my tastes. Kat comes closer to me than anyone I've heard in years at capturing the magic the Billie Holiday sound and vibe. I first heard one of her tracks playing on Music Choice over my TV (I tend to have music playing on the TV more than anything else - go figure). At once, I had to drop my book and pay attention to what I was hearing; at once, I downloaded Kat's album into my Amazon cloud. This music will churn your mind and soul, relax you to your core, and bring you sheer joy. You need and deserve this kind of music in your life, trust me. On the album she offers some well know classic like "Night and Day", but mostly delivers unique material that is quite extraordinary. I cannot wait until her next album. Trust me, you need this type of music in your life.

We first heard Kat Edmonson at the Fort Worth Jazz by the Boulevard festival this fall, and I came home and immediately ordered her CD. Her voice is unique, and the back-up instrumental musicians outstanding. You should give her a listen.

Kat Edmonson has a sultry voice that brings to mind the greats like Billey Holiday and Lena Horne. Yet she smoothly blends a fresh modern style with the old classics giving them a new twist. Lyle Lovett is lucky to have this sultry kitten on tour with him this summer. I wish them well and hope to make a show somewhere here in the South. If you can't see her in person, you really want to buy this CD and her latest being release shortly. You will not be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative album!!!, April 19, 2010

This is a wonderful debut album by Kat Edmonson and her talented entourage. She sings with ease, intelligence, beauty, and care. And Kevin Lovejoy is a genius on the piano. Together they make a formidable musical force that should bring us years of musical bliss. This album can be recommended to everyone regardless of your musical taste. Run, don't walk, to get this one.

Heard her on Pandora and flipped out. This album is terrific. Great voice, great band. Love her arrangement of "Just like Heaven" and immediately started thinking of other songs I'd love to hear her cover. Very refreshing. Hope Kat is around for a long time. Can't wait for her 2nd album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haven't heard the whole album yet..., October 19, 2011
This review is from: Take to the Sky (Audio CD)
...but I'm guessing it rates somewhere close to 5 stars. After reading the comparisons to other singers (Blossom, Stacey, etc.), I'd like to add another -- Joanie Sommers. Listen to Sommer's "Positively The Most," with Marty Paich backing. The similarities in voice quality, especially on the ballads, is uncanny. Good company, indeed, for the very talented Ms. Edmonson.
