So, of course, i'm a little bias considering that these guys are from my hometown, but in all honesty, they're really good. They have a sound that could be compared to SoCo or TSL, but with a more NorCal flavor. All the songs are REALLY catchy, and you'll be singing along in no time. It's good to know that in a world of gimic crap and trends, there are still a few bands that want to do honest pop-rock the way it should be. The guitars, drums, vocals, everything comes together for a tight, well-crafted sound.
For far too long, cities like San diego and Chicago have been getting all the attention for quality pop-punk, but Sacto has some of the best undiscovered talent out there. Support new artists from the 9-1-6, and be on the lookout for a full-length coming early next year!

These Guys Deserve Every Bit Of Praise They Get,
This review is from: Take It How You Want It (Audio CD)
For these guys only being a band for about a year, they have certainly done a lot.Their EP "Take It How You Want It" posseses some very key elements that most debut EP's lack. Jonathan's vocals have a range that rivals bands such as Motion City Soundtrack and Fall Out Boy. For an EP, the sound quality is fantastic, Jay Trammell is a true genious producer/engineer. Overall a great album, expect to see big things from these guys.

Wholesome sunny pop-rock emo. It's not particularly creative or original, but something about this music seems genuine to me, like they're just playing what sounds good to them with little regard for scenes or trends. They're writing good tunes, they know what they're doing, and they're not trying to be something they're not, so I kinda like this band. I'd definitely like it more if it wasn't so horribly overproduced though. The raw crunch of a rock guitar would really benefit this kind of music. The light, feathery, droney reverb does these songs a complete disservice. Speechless is the stand-out track, sounding like it could have been an outtake from The Juliana Theory's album Emotion Is Dead. "You give yourself away to everyone and now there's nothing left for you". I dare you not to sing along.

I first heard of this band on a DTR/Rushmore sampler in January of 2005. They have been one of my favorite bands ever since. Even though this EP is the only material they have it is FANTASTIC! It shows so much potential, just thinking about the music they're going to make gets me giddy.
I like pop punk a lot and i listen to a lot of bands that sounds exactly the same, but Self Against City is special. I can't really describe it because it's something that I feel inside but i don't think many can deny the special talent, chemistry, and potential these guys possess. It's only six songs but it's one of my favorite albums ever. Their full length finally comes out this fall and i absolutely cannot wait. I believe in them so much! i would encourage anyone and everyone i know to buy this album; including you! :)

That's what I have to say about this cd. I like a pretty broad variety of music...although definitely more mainstream. I bought this cd sort of on a whim, after listening to a couple of their songs at purevolume. It was pleasantly surprising. There are six songs, and I'm waiting for more. The songs are all well done, easy to listen to, fun to sing to. I'm not serious about music, nor have I ever left a critique, but I really enjoyed Self Against City. They have a great beat. Check them out for yourself - I think you might be happy you did.

it's hard to compete with reviews where the person writing it is from the hometown of the band but being from pittsburgh, pennsylvania i can only imagine being from a city where this pop/punk music comes from would be outstanding, im always on the search for new artists, i was using my best tool called pandora.com and came accross self against city. when i heard their song take it how you want it, it was exactly what i want to hear everytime i look for a new band. they are kick A$$.....i recommend this EP to anyone and hope to see a debut full length album very soon!!!!

This is terrible music, if you actually like emo with some instrumental talent, avoid this!!!,
This review is from: Take It How You Want It (Audio CD)
I am a huge fan of emo punk, actually its my favorite kind of music, i've been listening to it for over 10 years now. Unfortunately this band is just absolute gargage. I heard this cd and couldn't listen to even one track in its entirety, they are so boring. There's no musical talent put into these songs, they just go on forever and sound the same the entire time. I know there's a lot of positive reviews on this site, but it you are like me, and i know about 80 percent of you are, you will not enjoy this cd. Try and download if first, if you like it for free then go ahead and support the band, that's what they work for. If you buy this withough hearing at least 6 songs first forever, then i think you will definitely regret your decision.

Review by Dan Alcinii:
The debut release by Self Against City, the first band to sign to Rushmore Records, is finally here. These five guys from Sacramento, California have the ability to write catchy emo/pop-punk tunes all the while making it enjoyable and memorable. To be blunt, I don't know if the album would be as likeable if vocalist Jon Temkin were not in the band; his soft and soothing vocals gently sweep past your ears with every lyric. The musicianship shown by the rest of the band is strong, and compliments the vocals very well, especially the guitars, but Jon's voice simply overtakes the sounds spewing from the instruments and the soft guitars and bass lines barely have a chance to win a battle with a talented voice in which Mr. Temkin presents. Self Against City seem to have everything it takes to make it to the top of their game; a good sound, a pleasurable live performance and a record label willing to push the band, and in time, thousands of people will be bobbing their heads and singing along to the ailment of this Sacramento band. Take It How You Want It was just released no more then two months ago, and Self Against City have already begun writing for their debut Rushmore Records full-length. Is this a hardworking band, or what? For fans of This Day and Age, Mae, This Providence, and all those other pop-punk bands that can write a song that is catchy as hell. |
