Very Impressive!,

This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
Soon after I bought The Duran Duran Tribute Album (which I highly recommend) I bought the Operation Ivy Tribute Album. Most of the bands I knew little to nothing about, except for Home Grown. Home Grown's version of "Bombshell" is quick, slick, and perfect. Just like Op. Ivy would have sung it themselves. The track following "Bombshell," is Reel Big Fish's own version of "Unity." At one point, this was my favorite song on the album. My opinion has since changed, but once you hear this song you will be able to recognize why I felt this was the best song the album. Coming up right after that is "Big City" by a little known band called My Superhero. I was extremely impressed to say the least with this song! "Bankshot" starts off on a more humorous note with the producer pronouncing the name of the band, Pocket Lent, incorrectly. Moving on to "Sound System" performed by the one hit wonders Cherry Poppin' Daddies. This is a great song, it's just unfortunate that they were only one hit wonders. After that comes my absolute personal favorite track on the CD. "Smiling" by Teen Heroes is just a great rendition with the Teen Heroes' very own touch to it. I can't get enough of this song! The next above decent track on the album is "Freeze Up" by the Hippos. For some reason, I enjoy listening to this album over and over again. I think it's a great tribute album, and I would be humbled to have such multitalented bands perform my songs!

LESS THAN ONE STAR IF THEY HAD IT,

What a disgrace. How could anyone take such a great badn, in Operation Ivy, and mutilate their songs. This is the worst compilation I have ever heard. Not one of these songs is worthy of praise. Ever cover on the album, sounds like it was just thrown together in about 5 minutes. The record company should have realized this and decided not to produce this album, for it is a disgrace to Op Ivy, and it takes respect from some good bands such as the hippos, My superhero ect. who have worked so hard for respect in the ska world, and now they lost is by putting out such horrible stuff. Dont even think about buying this album. You will be truly disapointed.

the songs just aren't the same when other bands cover them,

This CD consists of new age punk and ska bands covering songs from the greatest band ever in my opinion. Although I am not into new age punk or ska, they are still the same songs performed by Operation Ivy back in '87-'89. One song is covered by a hip-hop group, and that has nothing to do with punk or ska (the music that Operation Ivy played) I don't know why that band is covering an OpIvy song!! That is the only bad part about the CD.The Aquabats do a great cover of the song Knowledge. For those who enjoy new age punk or third wave ska, this CD is for you. These covers of the songs pale in comparison to the actual songs done by Operation Ivy...but it would be so hard to make a tribute album to cover such a good band that this CDshould definately be appreciated.
