4.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive!
Soon after I bought The Duran Duran Tribute Album (which I highly recommend) I bought the Operation Ivy Tribute Album. Most of the bands I knew little to nothing about, except for Home Grown. Home Grown's version of "Bombshell" is quick, slick, and perfect. Just like Op. Ivy would have sung it themselves. The track following "Bombshell," is...

1.0 out of 5 stars LESS THAN ONE STAR IF THEY HAD IT
What a disgrace. How could anyone take such a great badn, in Operation Ivy, and mutilate their songs. This is the worst compilation I have ever heard. Not one of these songs is worthy of praise. Ever cover on the album, sounds like it was just thrown together in about 5 minutes. The record company should have realized this and decided not to produce this album, for...

The track following "Bombshell," is Reel Big Fish's own version of "Unity." At one point, this was my favorite song on the album. My opinion has since changed, but once you hear this song you will be able to recognize why I felt this was the best song the album. Coming up right after that is "Big City" by a little known band called My Superhero. I was extremely impressed to say the least with this song! "Bankshot" starts off on a more humorous note with the producer pronouncing the name of the band, Pocket Lent, incorrectly. Moving on to "Sound System" performed by the one hit wonders Cherry Poppin' Daddies. This is a great song, it's just unfortunate that they were only one hit wonders. After that comes my absolute personal favorite track on the CD. "Smiling" by Teen Heroes is just a great rendition with the Teen Heroes' very own touch to it. I can't get enough of this song! The next above decent track on the album is "Freeze Up" by the Hippos. For some reason, I enjoy listening to this album over and over again. I think it's a great tribute album, and I would be humbled to have such multitalented bands perform my songs!

Ever cover on the album, sounds like it was just thrown together in about 5 minutes. The record company should have realized this and decided not to produce this album, for it is a disgrace to Op Ivy, and it takes respect from some good bands such as the hippos, My superhero ect. who have worked so hard for respect in the ska world, and now they lost is by putting out such horrible stuff. Dont even think about buying this album. You will be truly disapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars the songs just aren't the same when other bands cover them, June 29, 1998

This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
This CD consists of new age punk and ska bands covering songs from the greatest band ever in my opinion. Although I am not into new age punk or ska, they are still the same songs performed by Operation Ivy back in '87-'89. One song is covered by a hip-hop group, and that has nothing to do with punk or ska (the music that Operation Ivy played) I don't know why that band is covering an OpIvy song!! That is the only bad part about the CD.The Aquabats do a great cover of the song Knowledge. For those who enjoy new age punk or third wave ska, this CD is for you. These covers of the songs pale in comparison to the actual songs done by Operation Ivy...but it would be so hard to make a tribute album to cover such a good band that this CDshould definately be appreciated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't look at the rating, read the reivew, November 29, 2001

This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
I first heard operation ivy at a friends house, and left with the idea that i had just discovered a completely new type of music. I was right. Their music has spirit, energy, and is overall great. This CD is supossadly a tribute to Operation Ivy. But... I thought tributes were to pay homage, not to laugh at or scorn. While some of the songs obvouisly try to convey the energy of Op Ivy, some others, such as the Aquabats, insult the image of Op Ivy. I may sound like some one who is just pissed because their favorite band is being made fun of, but that's because that is what I am, and theres nothing wrong with it. If this was a joke album like weird Al Yankovitch's stuff, I could understand it. But with the cover displaying the Operation Ivy logo, and a reacreation picture of the guy on the back of the cover booklet in energy, it is being sold as a tribute. Buy it if you want it as a joke. However, if you are a true Operation Ivy fan who wants more of the same great music, look elswhere. Unfourtuantly, judging by this album, those of you looking for some new Operation Ivy are going to be very dissapointed. If only more of today's artists treated music not only as another art medium, but as a "indirect force for change".

-An Op Ivy fan

3.0 out of 5 stars It was okay, December 26, 1998

This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
This cd was all right, but nothing compared to the original songs. The Home Grown and Reel Big Fish songs are dry and pretty stupid. Reel Big Fish does a really crappy job of covering one of Op Ivy's best songs, "Unity". Pocket Lent's version of "Bankshot" is pretty cool, better than the original, I think. The Blue Meanies -TOTALLY- changed the sound of "Yellin' in my ear", but it still sounds pretty cool. The Cherry Poppin' Daddies mangled "Sound System", my second favorite Op Ivy song, and made it sound all swingy and stupid. The Hippos did a pretty okay job of "Freeze Up", my favorite Operation Ivy song. The Long Beach Dub All Stars did "Take Warning" pretty well. Please buy the original before this one, because it is a lot better.

1.0 out of 5 stars total total complete garbage, February 8, 2004
This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
listen to me. listen to me. this album is the worst worst worst album ever. what a complete total wrong thing to do to one of the best bands ever. I love op ivy like everyone else, from back on the h street videos, and it would be great to hear more from them. however, this is not it. what's the best band on here? blue meanies. they are so good in their own right, but still have no business demolishing yellin in my ear. bad town? give me a break. just kill me now. does punk rock really does suck this much now that bad town (total classic) gets destroyed by those idiots? cherry poppin daddies? weak as hell. aquabats - corny. in fact, now I'm pissed. buy this album and you're a total fool.
by the way, most tribute albums suck. but I would imagine that almost every other one in the whole world rocks this pile of crap.

1.0 out of 5 stars what a total piece of garbage, July 8, 2002

This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
i absolutely love operation ivy i think they were one of the greatest bands and when i heard about this cd comin out i was soo excited. i knew it would never be operation ivy but i expected way more than this. when i bought it, i got home and popped it in my cd player. i began to listen to it and very quickly the smile faded from my face. what complete and utter [junk] is this? i returned it the next day. if your payin tribute-PAY TRIBUTE. don't insult them and twist their music into horrible [junk] that no one wants to listen to. i know they could never compare to operation ivy, but man, some of these bands shouldn't even be famous.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad Attempt To Honor Operation Ivy, December 22, 1999
This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
Most of this album sounds downright bad in their weak attempts to cover Operation Ivy with a new spin. ITs not really a bad idea or anything, it just didn't work here with these artists. A couple bands are okay on this album, but for the most part the selection is awful. By the way where is Telegraph's version of Unity?

2.0 out of 5 stars WOW this is bad, June 29, 1999

This review is from: Take Warning: Songs of Operation Ivy (Audio CD)
How is it possible to take such great songs and mangle them to a point where it's almost impossible to listen to. That question still baffles me, except for a song or two this album really sucks, i mean really SUCKS, the only reason I gave it a 2 was because the cd has to do with OpIvy. I hope every band out there has learned from this horrible display of crap, Leave these legendary songs to a legendary band.
