Originally issued as an EP, 1985's Take What You Want was the first release by melodic rockers Hurricane, which featured Kelly Hansen on vocals. The band might have emerged from the L.A. hair metal scene, but their polished and melodic sound was closer to House of Lords and Giuffria than it was to Poison or Motley Crue. Take What You Want is a very strong debut recording, and it's easy to see how it landed the band their major label contract. The songs are very well written and have a great sense of melody, and Hansen's voice is simply irresistible.
In addition to the EP's original 6 songs, the CD includes early versions of three songs from Hurricane's second album Over the Edge - I'm On To You, Baby Snakes, and Over the Edge - as well as a brief instrumental track called L.A. Luna. These songs are interesting enough, but the real value of Caroline Records' 2008 reissue of Take What You Want is hearing the original EP with crystal clear digitally remastered sound. If you're a fan of the 80's melodic rock and/or hair metal scene, these Hurricane reissues are a must-have, and Take What You Want is the ideal place to start. NOTE: The CD comes housed in a mini-LP style package. It's essentially a slightly oversized cardboard sleeve with the disc enclosed in an interior envelope. The reissues of the band's later albums include liner notes, but they are missing from this album. I'm not a huge fan of this kind of packaging (it doesn't do a great job protecting the CD), but I have to admit that it is ideal for showcasing the album cover artwork, and as you can see Hurricane's album covers are worthy of the extra attention!

Good debut...pick it up if you can find it on CD,

This is the band's debut and has some great songs. I have the tape, which contains a bonus instrumental called La Luna at the end. Not sure if this was part of the CD or not as it is not listed on Amazon's track listing. The instrumental is similar to Randy Rhoad's "Dee" and is pretty cool. Because the label this band's original releases were on is no longer in existance, all their older releases are currently out of print. Would be nice if a new label picked up the rights and reissued this. There are a couple filler songs on this release (Girls Are Out Tonight being one of them), but this rocks for a band's debut and is worth picking up if you can find a used copy. 3 1/2 stars and is very comparable to their second release Over The Edge.

Glam metal/hard rock gang fully armed!!,

This review is from: Take What You Want (Audio CD)
"Take what you want" it the debut album by American melodic hard rock/glam metal band "Hurricane", originally released in 1985. The line up features guitarist Robert Sarzo, bassist Tony Cavazo, drummer Jay Schellen and renowned AOR singer Kelly Hansen.
"Hurricane" are often associated with pioneer glam metal group "Quiet Riot" since two members of each band share blood relations. The sound of "Hurricane" is actually comparable to that of "Quiet Riot" since it is based on thick riffs, memorable choruses, up-front rhythm section (with the occasional double bass drumming) and the least amount of keyboards possible. The album opens with "Take me in you arms" amongst the best up-tempo/rocking love songs written in the `80s. "The girls are out tonight" has a similar vibe to "Quiet Riot"s "Cum on feel the noise", proving a fair equivalent. There is of course the metallic "Take what you want" and the protestant hard rocker "Hurricane" which literally says everything regarding the band's orientation. One would not be exaggerating by suggesting that even though all four musicians leave their mark on "Take what you want", front man Kelly Hansen is the heart and soul of this early incarnation of "Hurricane" as few could deliver this collection of songs as convincingly as he does. If you are a fan of melodic hard rock and early glam metal you probably already have the "Hurricane" debut in your collection.

Awesome band, some say a 'one hit wonder', but almost every song on this cd should have been a hit.

Another must have for your 80's collection. Great debut from a great band! "It's Only Heaven" is one of the most haunting tunes you've never heard.

In Like A Hurricane!!,

This is the debut cd from the great hard rock band Hurricane. The song listing on the cd should be:
1. Take Me In Your Arms 2. The Girls Are Out Tonight 3. Take What You Want 4. Hurricane 5. It's Only Heaven 6. Hot & Heavy 7. La Tuna (Instrumental) Hurricane was: Kelly Hansen (Vocals), Jay Schellen (Drums), Tony Cavazo (Bass)- Brother of Quiet Riot's Carlos Cavazo & Robert Sarzo (Guitars)- Robert is the Brother of Whitesnakes Rudy Sarzo. This is a hair metal masterpiece that is nearly impossible to find. But if you are lucky enough to find one, pick it up, you will not regret it.

Another Hair Band,
By
This review is from: Take What You Want (Audio CD)
Although decent at times, it is just another hair band from the mid-80's. And a note to "Stryper Fan": the original album (vinyl) did not have La Luna (1:20) on it. It came on the 7 song EP. If you are into mid 80's rock buy this. Just don't expect to be dazzled.
