Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Friedman's first studio album, Taken Man, presents ambitious songs about art, wild dreams, and wanderlust. Produced by longtime crony, songwriter/guitarist, and label-mate Paul Curreri, the songs on Taken Man are well-crafted, insightful, and infused with a stark wit. This makes sense coming from a songwriter who is also a New Yorker cartoonist. He may sound like Lou Reed channeling a Bob Dylan head cold, and plays old school country and folk so worn down the ruts have ruts, but this is no nostalgia or novelty act.

The title track to his debut studio album, Taken Man, found itself at #30 on the New York Post's "207 Best Songs To Download in 2007".

In addition to Curreri, the album includes special guest appearances by Jeffrey Foucault, Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor, Devon Sproule, Natalia Zukerman, Kris Delmhorst, Melissa Ferrick and others. Features concert favorites, "I Don't Want To Die Like Andy Kaufman," "Self Portrait In White Knuckle Death Grip," and the hilarious, "Guys Like Me Don't Get Grants."

About the Artist

"It should be considered un-cool not to be into Andy Friedman & The Other Failures," says David Gates of Newsweek. Andy Friedman, the Brooklyn-based visual artist, songwriter, and iconoclast performer has made a name for himself over the last five years as a genre-bending, media-blending "erudite redneck," (Boston Globe) "winning over audiences" (SF Weekly) with his "art-tinged folk songs," (New Yorker) story-songs, and talking blues onstage. Nicknamed the "Hillbilly Leonard Cohen" (Athens News) and "The King of Art Country," (Minneapolis City Pages) Friedman is the embodiment of original Brooklyn country songwriting.

He moonlights as a cartoonist for, most notably, The New Yorker, but the songs written by the "hard scrabble singer-songwriter" (Time Out New York) aren't for laughs. "[Friedman] has a mastery of wordy self-loathing that many white dudes with guitars would kill for." (Nashville Scene)

I don't usually notice the bass playing, but it's pretty phenomenal on this cd. Good songs. Definitely an underground band that should have gone farther, or maybe they are still on the way up - I'm not sure.

I saw them in a small club outside Boston,Ma. a couple of years ago and was blown away. I bought the CD and still play it often.
