Book Description

September 28, 2010
Book 8 in the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling Midnight Breed vampire romance series

AT THE CROSSROADS OF DEATH AND DESIRE, A WOMAN TASTES A PLEASURE NO MORTAL IS MEANT TO SURVIVE.

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand--and control--a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock's care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order's mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself--until a secret from Brock's past and Jenna's own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taken by Midnight-A Joyfully Recommended Title September 28, 2010
By M. Nix
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Jenna Darrow wakes up in a medical room at the Breed compound, however the only thing normal to her is the face of her best friend, Alex. Jenna has faced many things that have made it necessary for her to be strong; the loss of her husband and child, the loss of her career as an Alaskan State Trooper and the memory of the creature who broke into her house and assaulted her. Now she has to face something that just might break her. Her entire body is changing because of something that ancient being did to her that hellish night.

Brock is one of the vampire warriors who are known as the Breed. Each warrior has one special gift and Brock's is to take away pain. He has been with Jenna since the night they located the ancient in her house and destroyed him. No one is quite sure what happened to Jenna, but Brock knows the pain she has gone through intimately as he has been taking it from her. Now she is awake and they have discovered that something strange is happening to her DNA. The time Brock has spent with Jenna gave him a closer relationship then he has allowed with any woman in many years.

Jenna sees major changes in her physical body as the hours go by and while scared, she comes to see that trusting the warriors is her only chance to discover exactly what was done to her. Brock and Jenna both feel the intensity of the passion that seems to hover around them and it only takes one spark to become much more than feelings. The danger that always surrounds the Breeds, and their Breedmates, soon includes Jenna, a fact that scares Brock to some point. Knowing she has to help Brock and the others, Jenna puts her own investigation talents to work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Taken by Midnight September 30, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love this series and like everyone else who has read it, was anxiously awaiting this latest book. One of the things I like best about this series is the strong female characters. And of course the hot dudes of the Breed. I have to say that I thought Taken by Midnight suffered from "re-cap-itis". In other words I felt like the author was so busy inserting the story lines thus far, that it limited her ability to contour a fresh story. I think it is a safe guess that most publishers want a reader to be able to pick up any book in a series, and get something out of it. But if you are like me, you start at the first book in the series, and yes, we tolerate the required catchup for the most part. But jeez...I felt like this whole book was a run down on stuff that already happened.
Also, I thought some of the dialogue between all the characters was really formulaic. Plus, I kept waiting for the reveal on what the heck Jenna had become. Did I miss it? Anyway, I of course want to read the next in the series, but I gotta say, so far this is my least favorite book of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taken by Midnight (Midnight Breed, book 8) Review September 28, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Jenna Darrow has just survived an attack against an ancient evil not born of this world and she will never be as she was before. What happen during the attack is rapidly changing her body and mind. Jenna is struggling to take control of herself and her new situation at the compound of the Order. The male assigned to take care of her helps take away her pain and feel emotions she hasn't felt in years. Brock and Jenna both hold emotional scars but when their purely physical relationship turns into something more, they become what the other needs and together they make a formidable team in the fight against an enemy that must be stopped.

Jenna lost her family in a car accident years ago and has lived with the grief since. She is attacked in the last book and her determination to survive pulled her though it. I admired her character a lot for her intelligence, stubbornness and ability to keep picking herself up and moving forward no matter what cards she is dealt. Like most she has her moments of self doubt but nothing that made me dislike her character. Brock is one of the newer members of the Order, which is an elite group of ancient vampire warriors. He is a skilled fighter with a likable personality and selfless in his act of taking pain from others onto himself. He also carries baggage from his past that helps him relate to Jenna. These two click right away and you know a physical relationship between them just won't do. They make each other stronger and help each other move on from their past tragedies.

The ancient who let Jenna live didn't part without leaving a part of him in her. Unexplained changes are happening to Jenna that give her abilities no mortal should have.

5.0 out of 5 stars She Just keeps getting Better!!! September 29, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
How I have loved to watch this series grow! Lara Adrian is on my top 3 Favorite Authors list and she hasn't disappointed me yet! The Midnight Breed Series just keeps getting better and better, With Jenna and Brocks story she set us up for a lot more to come, their relationship was very sweet developing and the fact that we got to see the whole Breed family throughout the whole book was a plus. I love to know what's going on with other characters we have read about in the past. A lot of authors tend to lose sight of past characters we have read about and loved and make us wonder what ever happened to them and what are they doin now? or they just give them the tiniest blurb to let us know they are still kickin'. Lara was very good at including everyone in this addition to the series. Great book don't miss it! I'm just sad now that I finished so fast and have to wait so long now for Hunter's story!

Hunter is dear to my heart--in many ways like a child.
Who is the only Breedmate for him?
Mira of course. She is the one that saved him in Nico's story. She is the one that calms him. Since she has to grow up (what is she-about 9 years old?), some years are going to have to pass. I think... Read more
