5.0 out of 5 stars Too Good to be true
I was just browsing this site and I came across this CD. I own this CD, along with other Isley Brothers CDs. I am purely disgusted with some of the reviews being left about this CD. It's a great CD. I love the way the old school beats blend with someone the new school voices. "Beauty in the Dark" is my favorite. Mos Def's voice really complements the "Groove With You"...

3.0 out of 5 stars Groove Thang
This album is likely to irritate the purists, so be forewarned (see below for some examples), but IMHO it's a pretty groovin' CD. Not all the tracks are keepers, thus three stars, but "That Lady" and "Between the Sheets" in particular are good updates to the classic Isley Bros. sound. Don't replace your copies of 3+3 with this, but this disc offers some good funky soul...

5.0 out of 5 stars OK, I'm an odd cat, I liked this remix!, December 28, 2004
This review is from: Taken to the Next Phase (Rmx) (Dig) (Audio CD)
First, I have to admit I also bought the Essential Isley Brothers when I got this CD, I don't think you can own this remix without having the originals. That said, I was kinda concerned about the reviews I read on here, did they ruin these classics? Well, in my opinion, no. I am old school and no big fan of hip-hop or rap. I will occasionally listen to it, but I don't own one single CD of that genre. This remix project doesn't deviate too far from the original deep soul of the Isley Brothers, just a few extra ingredients to spice things up a little, to bring them up to more modern sounds; but there is no disrespect to the original masterpieces. It is a nice compliment to any Isley Brothers collection, not a necessary one, but if you have expanded tastes than I think you will like this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, October 6, 2004
This review is from: Taken to the Next Phase (Rmx) (Dig) (Audio CD)
The Isley's are the only Ole Skool group that have been able to change with the times. The cd is an excellent example of the group dynamically staying with the times. I believe the critics of this album are so accustom listening to the Isley's old stuff that they cannot fathom the new sound. All of my friends that have listened to the album loved it. This is my first review ever and I was prompted by such the bad reviews this cd had gotten and just had to......
Great job guys, I love the old and new sound keep up the as the book says, "Who moved my Cheese" in order to survive in business one must be flexible and adapt to changes. I SALUTE YOU!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Take On An Old Idea, September 22, 2004
This review is from: Taken to the Next Phase (Rmx) (Dig) (Audio CD)
Just about every classic Isley beat has been remade over the years, these remixes tend to offer the same feeling; a hint of the isley groove with the soothing voice of ronald isley. While the CD has good intentions some of the changes just arent for the better, the high points are "Tell Me When You Need It Again" ft. Will. I. Am of the Black Eyed Peas, and "That Lady" featuring "?uest Love" Overall this cd is a nice add-on for the library of an isley brothers afficianado, but otherwise its not worth your dollar.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better., September 23, 2004
This review is from: Taken to the Next Phase (Rmx) (Dig) (Audio CD)

At first, this may appear to be a tribute album when you look at the titles and see somebody else's name next to them. But the front title tells you that this is basically a remix album. There are some good ideas here, firstly this is not a House/dance mix album - not that a house/dance mix of an Isley Bros tune wouldn't work. The Isley's have done their share of dance material - But dance mixes today tend to deviate completly from the original material and I think classics should not be treated like this unless the remixer can pull off a feat where it would sound like something the Isley's would have done had they recorded the song for the very first time, today. The remixes do not really depart from the original material for the most part. Rather, this album goes more into a hip-hop direction which brings my second point the Isley's have been used for backing hip-hop songs and the combo works well, and here, the hip-hop idea is expounded on and works equally well.

Unfortunately, the hip-hop ideal goes overboard with two wonder classics: Tell Of Tales (Tell Me When You Need It Again) and Beauty In The Dark (Groove With You). In these songs the Isley Brothers are taking a back seat. These songs are not remixes but rather new hip-hop songs in which the brothers music and vocals serve as the music backing much like Footsteps In The Dark served as Warren G's music backing for a song he did in the mid-90's(don't remember the name of it). These songs should have actually been featured on the remix artist's own albums as their own songs, featuring the Isley Brothers. Perhaps some other classics could have filled in here, but a few more songs would not have hurt either. Perhaps this could have been a 2-disc set featuring both hip-hop remixes as well as dance versions. Some great songs that could have been included would have been Fight The Power, Who Love's You Better, For The Love Of You and Livin' In The Life/Go For Your Guns.

This is one of the best remixed/remastered CDs of our time. The Isley Brothers sound is one that will be remembered and played from generation to generation. I absolutely love the production and guest appearances. "That Lady" was one of my favorite songs of all time. The remixed version reminds me of how much I love it then...and now! Mos Def certainly takes "Groove with You" to newer heights. I'd love to here more... like "Layaway" remixed!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Half Bad but needs more soul singers, April 7, 2005
This review is from: Taken to the Next Phase (Rmx) (Dig) (Audio CD)
The Isley Brothers Taken To The Next cover/remix album isn't half bad it's just that with some soul singers doing the singing it could have been better. The CD starts out with good with Will I Am hip hop take on Tell Me When You Need Me and other standout tracks include De La Soul on It's A New Thing and Rapahel Saidiq on Harvest For The World. The great big killer is saved for last with Mos Def turning "Groove With You" into the title-says-it-all "Beauty in the Dark; A throwback that's as funky as the original; that's incredible. Personally I would have artisits like Silk or Usher on Between The Sheets and Musiq or Bilai could have killed Choosey Lover. For some real soul check Stokely's cover of Make Me Say It Again Girl and Riff's Take on Voyage To Atlantis.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Poor, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Taken to the Next Phase (Rmx) (Dig) (Audio CD)
Now and days, since hardly any musicans have talent are remixes of greats being made. This cd was pretty poor. I am a huge fan of the (real pre R. Smelly) Isely Brothers. This cd left a very sour taste. I guess I was expecting something like Madlib or DJ Spinna & Bobbito on how they did there take on Stevie's old joints. This Cd is far from it. I only liked one song off of the whole cd, it was that Footsteps in the Darkness and I believe the only reason that I liked that song is because it was sort of similar to the original. If you are a fan of the Isley Brothers than I think that you should stay very far away from this cd. But if you are a fake hipster and this your first Isley Brother cd, than enjoy.
P.S. Mos..... what the F*@k are you doing!?!? Stop messing around and put out another cd.
One Love
