"You're beautiful," Raul told her. "That you know."
"I'm passable," Victoria corrected, "and I've reached the age of being a spinster."
"You've reached the age where you're no longer a twit. You're a woman, and a damned fine looking one. A man, if he were so inclined, could take you to the Mediterranean pirates and sell you for a tidy sum. I suppose you're still a virgin?"
Her face flamed. "Mr. ... Lawrence!"
"So you are. Yes, a tidy sum. Or I could keep you here as my plaything, tame you myself."
"I am not a wildcat!" The place where he held her, his hands to her arms, grew hot, as if his touch was causing friction.
"How would you know? You just admitted you're a virgin."
            "I most certainly did not!"
"So you're not a virgin?" He grinned as he watched her struggle with the answer.
Finally she settled on, "Whether I am or not is not your business."
"My dear Miss Cardiff, I would like to make it my business."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This serviceable and solid Victorian romance mostly takes place in the fictional country of Moricadia, long oppressed by the despotic de Guignard family. Raul Lawrence, the rightful heir to the Moricadian throne, is distracted from his covert revolutionary activities by Victoria Cardiff, a traveling governess, who recognizes him from a childhood encounter. Afraid that she will betray him, he kidnaps her. The sparks of their romance flicker against a backdrop of revolution, as Victoria slowly yields to Raul's caresses and the de Guignards decide to put a stop to his ambitious activities. Dodd (Chains of Fire) combines the two stories in a satisfying arc that delivers sensual sizzle, though some readers will flinch at scenes of aggressive seduction that verge on the nonconsensual. 3.0 out of 5 stars Or may be 2 and 1/2 I cannot decide April 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I too, like another reviewer, like Dodd, but this book was just not even that OK. The first half of the book was tolerable; the events flowed and one could follow almost with predictable interest. However, the second half of the book was just horrible. I skimmed through a bunch of it, but got the story anyway.
Our H and H's characters are well developed; the reader understands them and what motivates them. The storyline is also developed with a climax and all that is expected. The romance aspect is there, a bit too brown at the end with the proclamation of love in front of the Queen of England, and is also fully developed. I say all this because even though all the aspects of the book are developed, it still feels hastily contrived, formulaic, and not to mention absolutely lacking in originality. I guess usurping a throne should seem as an original plot for a romance, but Dodd does not pull it off.
The book left me shaking my head, thinking why on earth did I spend the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Money! April 9, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is a very good read! It's a wonderful romance story involving a young woman whose circumstances have led her to desire to epitomize a "gracefully aging spinster." However, Victoria Cardiff's plans of safety and comfortable stability are shaken to the core when she has a chance encounter with the only man who has ever made her lose control. Raul Lawrence is a king without a country, fighting to reclaim his ancestral title. He has thus far remained incognito, but Victoria could ruin years of subterfuge with one stray word. In order to protect his plans for revolution and for another chance to further his acquaintance with the beautiful Victoria, Raul steals her away from a ball. The supporting characters in this book were extremely likeable and made the book that much more awesome. Danel, Prospero, Hada, and Amya were personal favorites! I would give this book 10 stars if I could, just because it was a good romance without being too much. Victoria was a sensible, strong woman who didn't take any crap. From anyone. Raul was a wonderful hero, but he wouldn't have been half so wonderful without Victoria, so really, read this book so you can read their repartee'!

But after he saves her life and the two kiss - things get a bit complicated. Lady Victoria figures out that Saber is actually Raul - the rightful Prince of Moricadia.

Saber then kidnaps Lady Victoria to ensure she keep quiet with this knowledge and to keep her safe from his enemies. Saber finds himself struggling to stay on task. He knows what he must do --- but will he have the strength???? Will he lose all that he holds dear???

5.0 out of 5 stars She knocked it out of the park! April 6, 2011
By Marisa
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I always read Christina Dodd's historicals--I really like them. But some I like more than others, and this one I just adored. I really like the combination of a prim governess and a wild prince. The heroine here is prim and proper, but then at one point I really thought she was going to tie him to a tree and (ahem). SO much fun to see that sort of personality overcome by the pirate-like prince! Don't miss this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dodd is shrewd in her writing. April 10, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Victoria Cardiff is the English governess for the Johnson family who are temporarily in the country of Moricadia. She is also the only outsider who knows the truth about Raul Lawrence. He is a renegade prince plotting a revolution to take back control of Moricadia from the de Guignards. To ensure her silence, he kidnaps Victoria and carries her to his castle deep in the woods.

Raul Lawrence may be the name his English father demanded he use, but no matter how cruel the Englishman had been, Raul never forgot that he was actually Prince Saber of Moricadia. Soon, within the next two months, Raul would rescue his people from oppression. But with one innocent remark Victoria could ruin everything he and his people are so close to accomplishing; therefore, the lovely governess will remain with him until the revolution has succeeded.

Victoria is well cared for during her sojourn in Raul's castle. Needing to do something, anything, Victoria agrees to spend her days teaching the children. In return, the children begin teaching her their Moricadian language. Victoria spends time with the adults as well, teaching them about decorum and etiquette. They need to know how to properly conduct themselves once the fighting has ended, how to speak and act once they are part of a king's household staff. At night Victoria is locked within Raul's bed chamber. Refusing to be his lover, Victoria sleeps on the couch. Raul vows to vanquish her reserves. Each night he seduces her a little more, intending to imprint himself on her. Eventually he will possess her heart and soul.

***** FIVE STARS! I just cannot help loving a heroine who refuses to be swayed by a hero's debonairness and a hero equally determined to woo her.

Christina has published the Lost Hearts series in e-book, all enhanced with extra material:

Readers become writers, and Christina Dodd has always been a reader. She reads everything, but because she loves humor, she likes romance best. A woman wants things like world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants things like a Craftsman router with attachments, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will miraculously make his bald spot disappear. When Christina's first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to quit work and write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be?

Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before her first novel, CANDLE IN THE WINDOW, was published to great acclaim. In the years since, she has enjoyed writing witty, emotional novels for every reader: suspense, historical romances, paranormal romances, romantic suspense. Her stories have been translated into 25 languages, won the prestigious Golden Heart and RITA Awards and been called the year's best by Library Journal. Christina Dodd herself has been a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle (11/18/05, # 13 Down: Romance Novelist named Christina.) Publishers Weekly praises her style that 'showcases Dodd's easy, addictive charm and steamy storytelling.' With more than fifteen million of her books in print, her legions of fans always know that when they pick up a Christina Dodd book, they know they've found a story "For the wild at heart!"

Christina Dodd is married to a man with all his hair and no Corvette, but many Craftsman tools.
