Book Description

May 22, 2012 Raised by Wolves Novel
In the eye of a storm stands Bryn, the alpha of the Cedar Ridge werewolf pack. She is young. Female. Human. Physically weaker than any werewolf, she could never survive a battle with another alpha, the strongest, fiercest, and canniest of his pack.

Yet she cannot refuse a summons from the werewolf Senate. A rogue werewolf is attacking humans. The risk of exposure threatens to destroy pack life, and the center of the crisis is Cedar Ridge territory—her own lands.

Bryn has no choice but to attend the meeting, a gathering of the most powerful werewolves on the continent.  The subject is the rogue wolf, but Bryn knows the other packs want what she has. Her territory. Her females. Her pack.

They want her death.

Werewolf law prevents the other alphas from making a direct attack. It also prevents her former alpha, the mysterious and powerful Callum, from coming to her aid. But it doesn’t prevent Bryn from knowing what she wants. To keep her lands. To protect her pack.

To survive.

More About the Author

I'm a Jennifer who goes mostly by Jen, an Oklahoma girl who's also lived in Connecticut and England, and a writer who has a not-so-secret double life as a cognitive scientist. I love pop culture, mythology, science, superheroes, Joss Whedon, guacamole, television targeted at teenagers, and any song that I know the lyrics to. I have no sense of direction, but can read a book and shower at the same time. As is probably obvious, I do not particularly excel at writing my own bios.

I started writing professionally when I was a teenager and completed my first four published novels while I was in college. Since then, I've split my time between various graduate programs and writing books. In May 2012, I graduated from Yale University with a PhD in Developmental Psychology, which basically means I spent a lot of time thinking about the way the mind works and designing and running experiments that probe the way that young children and non-human primates view the world. My background in the psychological sciences has a habit of working its way into the books I write, sometimes in unexpected ways.

As a reader, I love strong female characters, books that blend emotional depth with sarcasm and humor, and supernatural stories that feel real. I'm a sucker for romance and search out authors who can write action sequences and violence without pulling their punches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Umm...WOW! I Did not see that coming... May 22, 2012

It is so rare to find a series that gets more addicting with every book, that gets better with every book, but alas I have found that Ms. Barnes is freaking awesome at what she does! This series just keeps getting better (I really really really hope this is not the last book!!!).

So without giving too much away, Bryn finds herself once again in a battle of strategy and cunning with Shay, who hates that Bryn has most of the female werewolves. But, just like Ms. Barnes to have something on the side, there is also a rabid running around torturing and killing innocents...and the Senate believes it is a female werewolf. While trying to find the rabid, protecting those she loves, trying to stay alive herself, and much more, Bryn finds herself wondering how this is all going to work out this time. Will she make it? Will those she loves? Who is the rabid? What is Shay up to this time? Better yet, what does Callum know that she doesn't?????

I loved it!! I definitely felt bitter-sweet at the end, but I'm hoping that there is at least one more book that will set some things right for Bryn! I feel like I better hurry and start to read something else to get my mind off Bryn or I'm gonna be thinking about her character non-stop until book 4 comes out! Who am I kidding, I love this series, I will be thinking about what comes next no matter what!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Dont get it November 23, 2012
By Kami
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I only hated this book slightly less than I hated Bloodrose by Andrea Cremer, the 3rd book in the Nightshade Trilogy.

Yep, I went into this book with high hopes, only to have them crushed and scattered never to be seen again.

I dont get it!

I have read what the author has said about ending the series, and why she ended it the way she did, and I still dont get it. This is why I read cheesy romance novels, at least they guarantee me some happy endings. Books like these are going to be the death of me. I am not going to sleep tonight because all I will be able to think about is this damn book.

I will never ever read a book in which a character is named Shay, nu-uh never again. That name is cursed, I swear it. If I ever meet someone in real life who is named Shay I will probably punch them in the face.

*sigh* the series was good, the books were good, the writing was good right up until things went to hell. Some people liked the ending, some people loved the book. I however did not fall into that category. Proceed and read this series at your own risk to your mental health. Books like this really should come with disclaimers.

2.0 out of 5 stars No Hope for Happiness November 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was well written, engaging, believable, and had me staying up late to finish it. Having said that, this book left me thoroughly depressed for the last 1/3 of the book and for several days after finishing it.

If you want a book with a happy ending--do not read this book. If you want a book where even if bad things happen you feel optimistic at the end of it--do not read this book.

**Spoilers centering on the general feel of the book. No actual events given.**

Through the first two books we see that the main character (Bryn) has chosen a hard road and her life will never be "rainbows and unicorns." In this book, the last in the series, the author spends the book setting up an ending that makes it perfectly clear that there is no hope for the main character to ever have a happy life. In fact, over time her life will just get harder and harder.

The author does a great job of this, too great of a job. I finished the book whole heartily believing that over time Bryn will lose more and more of the things that make life worth living for Bryn the person. She will be asked to make sacrifices that will leave her little in her life but duty.

A very well done book by the author, but since it was at the expense of destroying a character I love I had to give this book 2 stars.
