Great new offering from Zion I. Phat beats as usual from Amp Live. He definitely is trying to expand his musical horizons, with jazz, big band, dirty south, techno pop, gospel influences throughout. Zion also experiments with this rhyme flows - some fast, some slow, and some in-between. Definitely a solid effort from the Town Folks. Oakland is represented nice on this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zion I clearly takes over..., February 20, 2009

Ive been a fan of these two guys for quite sometime. This CD does not disappoint. Instant classic with this CD. Amp Live is and has been the best in the game (you'll see by this offering). He can go old school or new school and he shows his diversity. Zumbi is one of the best Lyricist in the underground rap scene. he as always spits it.
Fav. Trax: The Takeover,DJ DJ, Country Baked Yams, Coastin, and Peppermint Patty

Such a different beat and style on some of the songs on this CD... A lot of 808 talking and beats for sure. Some awesome, some decent overall 4 star. The end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zion I does it again..., March 22, 2009
This review is from: Takeover (Audio CD)
True & Livin' was an incredible album they dropped a few years ago. I don't know if you can compare the two, but that and their latest offering, The Take Over, are incredible albums.

Amp Live (producer) experiments with a few different styles here, but they all sound great. They show love to DJ's on "DJ DJ" which has a Planet Rock type feel to it. They got a couple of bass heavy, head nodders as well in "Geek To The Beat" and "Juicy Juice."

Another couple of my favorites on the album were both parts of "Caged Bird." The beats are so fresh and this is what hip-hop needs. One of the best underground albums I've heard in a while; can easily bump from the first track to the last.

If you like this, check out Zion I's other albums True & Livin' and Mind Over Matter (debut); emcee Zion (Zumbai) also has a few solo projects out there that are worth checking out, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars No letting up from Zion I, March 3, 2009

Just had the opportunity to listen to the entire album. In an era where a Music CD may give you 3-4 songs that are good, this album hits you with different sounds and practically every song is good. Had to purchase it on the spot! Big up Zion I!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Diverse and original beats and rhymes, February 28, 2009
This review is from: Takeover (Audio CD)
This is actually my first Zion I purchase. I'm sad to say I've been sleepin', but I was completely impartial goin' into this. I recommend no one sleep on this excellent, skip-proof CD. It's a contender for the best album of 2009. I can say that with confidence even though we are only two months into this year. The songs are distinctive from one another, yet the album flows perfectly. Amplive's production is top-notch, multi-layered, automatic-head-knockin' ish. Zumbi's rhymes blend so well they are like another layer to the instrumentals.
As I said every song is nice, but the best of the best is "Antenna", "Coastin", "In the Mornin", and "Radio." BUY THIS - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Take Over" is on some Next Ish., February 16, 2009
This review is from: Takeover (Audio CD)
If your already a fan of Zumbi & DJ Amplive (AKA ZION I), then you already know what these two bring to the table. For those of you not familiar, well then my friends, what an introduction awaits you.
To say the Oakland Duo came correct with this album is understated.

Where to begin? First Lets start with the production, if AmpLive isn't already regarded as one of the best producers in ALL of hip hop, heck all of music, (This guy's done remixes for Radiohead, yup Radiohead), then this will change some minds. Make you say, Kanye whooo?

From innovative futuristic tunes like "Antenna", which touches everything from electro rock to house fused with hip hop, to the break beat old school vibed out "DJDJ" or the syrupy "Country Baked Yams" wich features Devin The Dude.

"Geek to the beat" & "Juicy Juice" are straight Oakland/SF out the caddy slappers, while "Radio" is just a good time get up and boogie joint.

On the the Rappin side of things, MC Zion, or Zumbi, comes tight with the flow. He has always been a dope lyricist, but he's became more multi dimensional on the latest. From playful singing, to the classic cali vibe flow, to clever witt, to bay area flows, to insightful, to straight....

Favorite tracks:

"Geek to the beat", "DJDJ", "ANTENNA", "Country Baked Yams" & "Radio". But they are all excellent. If you ever get a chance to see these guys live, do yourselves the favor, it will change your mind on what a live hip hop show is.
