From AudioFile

This book is formulaic, and here's the formula: man and woman, chases, violence and mayhem, death, exotic locales, and the remnants of aliens. Yes, aliens. Bestselling author Josh Culhane, who smokes constantly and resents the murder of his brother, who was in the CIA, follows clues to a secret project and ends up at an ancient starbase under the ice in Antarctica. Naturally, his beautiful, athletic girlfriend comes along for the ride. The villain and his evil daughter are right behind, spraying bullets at every opportunity. Performer Charlie O'Dowd almost vibrates with excitement. His is a young voice, expressive, even eloquent among all the breathless action, and he carries the story nicely. More About the Author

Along with his wife, Sharon, Jerry Ahern is the author of over eighty internationally published novels, under the name Jerry Ahern, as well as the pseudonyms "Axel Kilgore" and "Red Mitchell." Jerry has written over a thousand magazine articles, columns, features and interviews. His latest non-fiction books are SURVIVE! THE DISASTER, CRISIS AND EMERGENCY HANDBOOK, THE GUN DIGEST GUIDE TO CONCEALED CARRY HANDGUNS and ARMED FOR PERSONAL DEFENSE. Jerry has regular columns in the monthly magazines GUN WORLD, DILLON BLUE PRESS and KNIVES ILLUSTRATED, this latter column dealing with swords and their history. The latest Ahern novel is from Baen Books (www.baen.com), entitled WRITTEN IN TIME, which the Aherns describe as "...a semi-autobiographical time travel science fiction steam punk western."

You can visit Jerry on the internet at www.jerryahern.com. On Facebook, you can follow what Jerry's doing on the Official Jerry Ahern fan page; and, if you're a fan of THE SURVIVALIST, as so many people around the world seem to be, you'll be happy to know there's a growing Facebook Group dedicated to the series. Graphic Audio (www.graphicaudio.net) has produced fully sound scaped versions of THE SURVIVALIST, with sound effects, music and an entire cast of voice actors. Meanwhile, Speaking Volumes (www.speakingvolumes.us) is re-releasing over sixty Ahern novels in print, all the popular electronic formats and as audio books. New releases appear each month.

Jerry Ahern recently announced that THE SURVIVALIST will be returning, by popular demand, picking up where the 29th book (#27, since two books were not numbered) ended. The book is in its early stages and should be finished sometime in 2012, its working title THE INHERITORS OF EARTH. When Ahern isn't writing, he takes on the novels and memoirs of selected clients for editing and book doctoring. He has been editing other people's work since 1973.

Jerry and Sharon, high school sweethearts, have been married since 1968 and have two grown children and five grand children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Action-Adventure Novel I Ever Read, March 12, 2002
By
This review is from: The Takers : Compelling Action in the Spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark (Mass Market Paperback)
Why is this book out of print? At least there's an audio cassette version still available.

The Takers was the first in a projected series that never got beyond the second book, and more's the pity. Ahern writes taut action/suspense, and The Takers rolls along like a freight train.

Ex-CIA special operations head Steiglitz and his psycho-daughter Sonia are in a race against heroes Josh Culhane and Fanny Mulrooney - he an action-adventure novelist and she an occult writer, presently helping out the CIA - to attain an ancient sea map that will theoretically lead them to the lost continent of Atlantis. Several dead bodies, exotic locations and hair-raising scrapes later, they find what they are looking for beneath the ice of the South Pole: an ancient flying saucer base, replete with still-working technology from the stars.

The story and handling are more adult than usual for this type of thing, and at least as good as anything Michael Crichton or Preston and Childs have ever written. Jerry Ahern, where the hell you been, man? Write more of these things!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...Would have been a great series., November 19, 2009
This review is from: The Takers : Compelling Action in the Spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark (Mass Market Paperback)
The Takers is a book that really deserved a series. I read this first in high school and really enjoyed it. As a previous reviewer noted, it is filled with in-depth shooting details that may bore the average reader. Simple to explain: Jerry Ahern is a writer and producer of various shooting sports magazine articles and at one time was CEO of Detonics. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he had his own line of shooting accessories (such as holsters and knife sheaths.)

The story line seems to have been co-opted over the last 2 decades, insofar that every sci-fi show (the Stargate franchise, for example) and some series' just about included the "alien technology left on earth" storyline.

The "communications" between Josh and his deceased brother are just eerie enough to raise one's hairs at the back of the neck and add additional suspense.

I beleive this is one book that could definitely be brought back into print. Unfortunately, as noted above, quite a few authors have latched onto the formula, but when the book was written, computers, not to mention the Internet, were not available for research, so all of it had to be doen the old fashioned way.
