5.0 out of 5 stars The text book for Hanen Project
This is the text book for the Hanen Project. Hanen is a course that parents of speech delay children can go through to learn to speak with their children. This book is an excellent guide to understanding how to get through to your child. The methods used are simple and successful. This book is best utilized with the Hanen course, but taking the course is not necessary...

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Try This At Home - Alone
From the other reviews, I see this book is meant to be used in conjunciton with a course, therapy and coaching from a professional. It is not a "do it yourself" guide, as the name implies. For this reason I am returning it. I am disappointed, but mainly it is my own fault, because I did not carefully read the description and reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars The text book for Hanen Project, November 9, 2006

This is the text book for the Hanen Project. Hanen is a course that parents of speech delay children can go through to learn to speak with their children. This book is an excellent guide to understanding how to get through to your child. The methods used are simple and successful. This book is best utilized with the Hanen course, but taking the course is not necessary. The book has helped me break into my childs world and now we can play and he can say some words. I highly recommend this book if you are unable to communicate with your child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Was not like any other book!, October 9, 2008
This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
I got tired of reading books that told me the specifics of why this was happening to my son instead of telling me how to go about fixing it. This book gives you specific ways to start your child on the path to speech when encountering delays. It doesn't tell you what synapses of the brain aren't functioning...it tells you how to engage your child to want to speak with easy daily routines. A definite awesome read for anyone who has a child with speech delay, no matter how trivial or severe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for parents to accompany Hanen course, October 7, 2008
This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
I purchased the textbook while I was taking the Hanen class offered through my county. If you can take a course in addition to reading the book that would be ideal, but its a wonderful resource on its own. The books is a quick and easy read, its not overly technical, the writing is very simplistic. There are plenty of examples of the strategies and techniques to help you figure out their key points.

On a side note, it is written with a really nice tone of empathy. It is clear that the writers realize that many of the parents who are reading this book may have kids that have a variety of issues, and that speech may not be their only area of challenge/delay but they nicely ask you to examine things you might be doing (unknowingly) to further enable/impede your child. The book is written with a VERY encouraging tone, with lots of emphasis on helping your child reach their full potential and also pointing out the importance of being realistic with your expectations, and understanding the different stages that kids have to go through to acquire better language skills. Overall a fabulous book -- its a great investment in helping your child and a fabulous course to take if you have the option available to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, October 5, 2009
This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
as a parent of a little girl with speech delay, this book is great, I got it from my library- I just wish that I could purchase it. I have to give it back on the 26th october.

my little girl makes herself understood very well with gestures, and is understanding us very well. she also understand two steps command but did not seem to want to speak.

with this book, I was able to understand what I was not doing right, and applying the technique explained, my little girl has started to speak a lot more, and is now at a point that she is communicating to us when she wants something with word. GREAT BOOK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the BEST book for any language delayed family to read!, January 19, 2009
This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
I've had this book for over 2 years now and it has been a great resource for our family. My son was diagnosed with a language delay/PDD and this was one of the first books I bought, and still use it to this day. It takes you through each level and how to encourage speech-From no words on up. My son has come a long way not only because of therapy, but because my husband and I learned how to encourage language in every day activities. Written so as it's easy to understand - Not a textbook. Buy this book!!!!!!!!

This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
My almost 3 year old only has about 10 words. Since we started trying the methods in the guide. He is more receptive to trying to say the word and we are having more fun. It is no longer work but part of our day and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, easy to follow advice, June 25, 2008
This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
I bought this book because my daughter has Down Syndrome and her language is delayed. We had been offered a place on a Hannen course, but it was cancelled, so I thought I'd try the book instead.
It is well written, with illustrations that expand on the text giving examples of the suggested techniques. The advice is well explained, and the techniques easy to follow. The advice intuitively feels right when you follow it, but despite seeming like common sense it is useful having it all written down, as I certainly don't always follow common sense without some kind of prompt!
There is also good advice on evaluating where your child is, so that you encourage the right level of communication.
I'd recommend this book to anyone working with children with language delay, whether your own children or someone else's

This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
This is a very good and easy to understand book, that a parent could get to start working at home with a child with language delays. I have gotten a few books on speech delay now so the information now is starting to become repetative for me. The informaton makes sense, and it does give very easy suggestions for parents to beable to work with their childern. THis book was recommended to me by my speech pathologist, but I could only find it on Amazon. My only complaint of it would be the expense for it...not cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent-Perfect approach, May 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide For Parents of Children With Language Delays (Paperback)
I agree with some of the other reviewers, in that a lot of books aimed towards speech delays in children focus on labeling the problem and scaring parents even more. This book just focuses on the delay, and guides the parent(s) to what point their child's communication is and ways to make it progress through interaction and play. I found it extraordinary and the pictures make it more involving to read, and understand rather than a text book. Kudos to the creator(s) of this book, its really something.
