Book Description

November 1, 2005
Not so long ago, corporate America was respected. Our products set the standards for the world; corporations bore a fair share of the tax burden; employees would stay with a company until retirement; customers and workers felt a loyalty to companies like GM, GE, Ford and Procter and Gamble, and to a fair degree that loyalty was reciprocated. Not any more. Taking Back the Corporation reveals what is wrong in corporate America today; the harm that is done, and who the main perpetrators and criminals are. Ralph Estes examines the long-term causes for the perversion of corporate purpose and asks what we, as the consumer and worker should demand. Finally, Estes considers different approaches to reform and argues that these transformations must occur if the social contract promised by capitalism is not to be permanently broken.

More About the Author

New manual and toolkit for activists - almost free ($0.99)

FIGHT THE CORPOCRACY, TAKE BACK DEMOCRACY: A MAD AS HELL GUIDE FOR THE 99%

Shows how the corporate system has been perverted, from serving the public interest to serving the interests only of corporate executives and shareholders. And so enormous costs are externalized onto the public, including the poor and needy.

Provides a valuable toolkit for activists:
- primer on corporations so you can know what you are dealing with
- model municipal ordinance and campus resolution, both demanding full and fair corporate accountability
- Sunshine Standards for Corporate Accountability to Stakeholders, promulgated by the Stakeholder Alliance in consultation with over a hundred activist organizations
- op-eds, originally published by Ralph Estes, that can be modified and published under your name to call corporations to account
- an invaluable compilation of websites, publications, organizations and other resources for activists

FIGHT THE CORPOCRACY traces development of the corporate personhood notion from a well-financed campaign to control appointments to lower courts until the infamous 1886 case of Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad was produced. Offers wording for a Constitutional Amendment that is the ideal of simplicity: "A corporation is not a natural person under the United State Constitution."

Details the enormous benefits bestowed when we, in our respective states, grant a corporate charter, benefits that justify our demanding corporate responsibility and accountability

Lays out a workable program to achieve full corporate accountability not only to stockholders but to all stakeholders including workers, customers, and communities.

Offers a number of two (or ten) minute actions for immediate implementation.

RALPH ESTES is an emeritus professor of business at American University, founder of the Stakeholder Alliance, veteran of numerous campaigns to enforce corporate social responsibility. He holds a doctorate in business administration and is also a CPA.
